Just been advised by my ISP, Tesco.net., that they have reduced my
Broadband
monthly charge from £19.97 to £17.99, and still retaining no download
limit.
Hope this is of interest to some of you.

What speed?

512k. Not bad, but not that competitive if you are happy with a capped
service.

About the same price as AOL, it is good compared to a few years ago,
when I was paying £40 a month for the same speep.
Tescos is normally very good, I was on Tescos Dial up once and it was a
good service. I know a few people who have Tescos Broadband and love it.

You can sometimes go for a cheaper service, but it iss not always the best.

Capping is a bad idea, I would prefer to pay a little extra for a non
capped ISP.

My web site ? But you're right, ADSL Guide doesn't list them. For
service levels etc refer to Virgin Net as both they and Tesco are simply
'virtual' networks of NTL.

If that is true, then why is it that Tescos have a much more reliable
service than virgin?

You got to have another option? there is such thing as free trade and I
am suprised that the E.u have not had a go, if you are limited to one
service/

Move to Hong Kong they've just started a 1Gb service !
Mind you, it costs £120 per month for the privilege.

I'd forgotten about them. ISTR Hull is the only area of the UK not
served by BT ? Your MP is also John Prescott, it never rains, it pours eh?

No, there is no option. The local telecoms service is provided by
Kingston Comms, there are no BT lines. All other ADSL services require a
BT line.

Many people have complained to oftel about the KC monopoly and unfair
pricing, but (no surprise) they are not very interested because they say
KC are not actively blocking anyone else from starting a rival service.
But the level of investment required to start a rival infrastructure
would be immense, so nobody does it.

There's no reason why Ofcom couldn't lean on KC to provide Local Loop
Unbundled (LLU) services. This is what is now happening at some major BT
exchanges, and as a consequence some ISPs can offer ADSL at costs below
and/or speeds above the conventional BT Wholesale products. For instance
UK Online un-capped 512k ADSL at 9:99/m, and 8 Megs at 29:99/m

See
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/04...adband_offers/

Of course we all know from topics discussed in this group how utterly
useless Ofcom are as a regulator.

In all communications with them they seem to come down very heavily in
support of KC's position.
