Default Sky+ hard disk upgrade followed by "not locked" on input 2

Hi,

The 17 minute bug with my V1 box got to me so much that I forked out
for a new V2 Pace box and a 250GB disk (the recommended Maxtor 5A250J0)
for it. Unfortunately, it's not working as planned...

The new box works fine. It's installed, and with the 40GB disk it
works fine. No problems recording on any channel.

When I put the 250GB hard disk in, I get "not locked" on input 2 and no
recording is possible.

I know that can be a sign of a hard disk failure, but when I put the
250GB hard disk into my PC and run Maxtor's advanced/thorough test on
the disk, it passes with no problems.

So, I'm not sure what to try next.

I'm confident that it's not a cable/input problem. There's
consistently a problem with input 2 when the new disk is in, and
consistently no problem when it's not. And swapping the inputs doesn't
change anything.

I've tried the new disk with the cable select jumper set. I've tried
it as master. I've tried it as slave. None worked. (I know cable
select is the proper setting, I was just getting a bit desparate.)

I've done umpteen full system resets with the new disk. It hasn't
changed a thing.

But when I put the 40GB disk back in, things go back to working
properly.

I tried the "restore factory settings" (
http://www.avforums.com/forums/archi.../t-185186.html ) where
you hold down the left and right navigation buttons, but it didn't seem
to have any effect at all - no play light, nothing.

So I'm puzzled. The disk itself seems to be fine, but it doesn't work
in the Sky+ box. The Sky+ box seems fine, just not when that disk is
in it. I don't know which bit to blame, and both vendors could
legitimately say the item is working properly so no replacement/refund.

Has anyone seen anything like this? A search on Google turned up this
one thread (
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...cff4b3bb626ea1
) but not much else. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

If anyone has any insight or can point me in the right direction, I'd
be very grateful.

Cheers,

Geoff

I guess the disk you are using is not compatible with your box ??

Try a new/alternative disk ?

Have you set the jumpers on the disk to "cable select"?

The Maxtor drive isn't "recommended", it's just the one that most
people use. And more fool them. They would all be well-advised to try
to find a suitable drive from a decent manufacturer.

As to why the drive isn't working in your box, that's an odd one.
Could you have the loose jumper problem encountered here recently?

For what it's worth: hard drive not recognised/faulty = no lock on
tuner 2.

Hi there,

I have a the same drive fitted into my V2 Pace box and all works fine.

Could it be that as far as I am aware you can only do one or two full system
resets then you have to remove the drive and do the low level format using
Maxtor PowerMax?

There is plenty of information re using this drive and how to complete the
upgrade on the AV Forums web site?

E-mail me if I can be of assistance, Tim.

Yep. I've tried setting the jumpers to master, slave, and cable
select, with no success on any of them.

Cheers,

Geoff

Yeah, fair point. I shouldn't have used the word "recommended".

As to "decent manufacturer", which would you suggest? I only buy about
one hard disk a year, so I don't have a wide experience. I'm open to
suggestions - all I want is a big (ideally 250GB) quiet disk for my
Sky+ box.

I'll try fiddling with the jumpers again. I suppose if the jumper
itself was faulty, it wouldn't make the connection for cable select and
would default to something else. That might lead to these symptoms...
Hmm...

Many thanks,

Geoff

Hi,

Yeah, I think I followed the instructions pretty closely, and I've been
reading the AV Forums to try to find out more. No luck so far, only
the nugget that input 2 not locked can be a symptom of a hard-drive
problem.

I hadn't heard that you could only do one or two full system resets
before having to low-level format. I'll certainly be giving that a go!

Many thanks,

Geoff
