Default faulty freeview receiver or poor reception? (Cambridge)

Hi,

I bought mu first STB two days ago and I have some problems with it... I
tried to find out what's going on but finally surrended
It's Pacific PSTB-1 from ASDA. Generally its quite nice - two scart sockets,
audio output, picture quality really good (if any) but...
Some channels are received really good (bbc5,uktv history, qvc, the
hits, ftn, tmf, ideal world, bid tv, price drop tv, bbc parliament).
Some are displayed only for a few seconds and then picture dissapears and
message "due totechnical difficulties, the service you require is currently
unavailable. Please try again later" is displayed (bbc1, bbc2, bbc3, bbc4,
bbc news24).
Sky travel, sky news, sky spts news - dissapear after couple of seconds
without any message.
Itv1,ch4, itv2, itv3 - very poor quality (vanishing and pixelized picure, no
sound)

I dont think it's a problem with aerial - signal level is quite high -
usually over 50 %...

Do you think it's faulty box? If yes which box under L50 should I buy?
I've seen some Daewoo and Echostar in Tesco - which one would you recommend?

Many thanks for help...

North, Chesterton, off Gilbert Rd...
I can't set rooftop aerial, so I have to use indoor one.
I'll try with other box, maybe Echostar 101?

I very much doubt this will work, if at all. Why can't you have an
outside one?, with the correct aerial your freeview should be fine
there. We are on the southern side of the city with open fields in the
sandy direction and indoor aerials here don't work even in upstairs
bedrooms.

Any existing aerial you are likely to have will be group A and sandy
Tx's DTV on CH 42 odd, and with an odd one out up at 67!, so your group
A is way off resonance!...

I've got an old group A that picks up all DTV very well from Sandy,
even in the loft! The aerial's about 30 years old, a small 5 element
array with a white coloured plug in the end. Before colour-coding I
should imagine.

I'm roughly 9 miles from t' Heath, if you call that spitting distance,
& not visible from my roof top due to the 'slant' in our street.
Still can't get perfect Ch5 analogue even with the DAT45, but that's
not important these days.

Yep the coverage in that direction is very good, downhill all the way.

That CH 5 transmitter is such low power and aerial height they might as
well turn the bloody thing off!....

There are worse ones than that. I believe Redruth has one of the
lowest Ch5 powers in the uk. Forget what it is but I imagine it to be
pretty useless.

3 kW (compared with 100 kW for the other four). Funilly enough I've seen
watchable C5 pictures from it at a house in Hope Cove in south Devon at
a distance of 66 miles from the transmitter, although most of those
miles were over the sea :-)
