"wowfabgroovy" wrote in message ... i know you can press back up to remove it temporarily, but it always comes back again. can it be removed permanently? thomson box. -- warning -- bbc7 and an increasing number of other stereo radio stations are broadcast in 1960s style mono on dab digital radio, a system that is supposedly "the future of radio". As Tumbleweed rightly says you can buy devices that send a remote signal to the digibox that imitates the press red/back-up button. The problem is of course,The viewer should NOT have to purchase *optional extras* to remove TV on-screen graffiti :-( At the moment I guess it's just *excitement at new technology* and improving it for the TV companies...It's a pity they don't improve it to the extent that the viewer can have the otion to turn it off. Since Sky,I've noticed TV has got more and more *in yer face* advertising than ever before,Split screen on programme endings and voice-over pillocks have more or less removed getting a decent recording from TV anymore. People must use it though otherwise the companies would have thought it all a flop and ditched it long ago! As kids go off toys,I'm getting to the state of going off TV because of the graffiti and voice-overs...No wonder Cloning DVD's is more the *in thing* with loads of PC users? |

See: http://www.metroland.nildram.co.uk/skyeye/ and http://freespace.virgin.net/itv.regions/ Note that if you have set up an auto-view this device will scupper it because it sends a 'backup' signal at frequent intervals which will cancel an impending auto-view. |

The BBC are the least of the culprits. Since I got my plasma, I'm watching less and less of my favourite Sky Sports channels. Pre-interactive, I used to leave Sky Sports News on ad nauseam but if they are going to treat us like children I'll watch a channel which doesn't. It's not as if interactive works properly anyway - I won't ever be tempted to use it until it works instantaneously. Stan |

Press 7, Press Left, Press Select and it goes away - for a couple of minutes. This is a great device for basic Sky, (I have one) but no good for Sky+ ,
because it sends 'backup'. Thus every time you want to play something back that you've recorded it stops the playback. I have had to retire mine and keep removing the red plague myself. I try to avoid channels that don't remove the red detritus on their own - the UKTV channels are good here in that they only put the crap up for a minute or so either side of a commercial break. If you pressed "backup" and the dot came back that quickly, these devices wouldn't be designed to send it once a minute as that would be ineffectual. They'd be sending "backup" once every few seconds. In practice the dots either come back after the next ad break (4 times per hour on Sky), or they are the "aggressive" type used last year on Big Brother that come back every few minutes. Sending backup once per minute is a compromise between interfering with remote control use/channel changing, and seeing the dot for an average of 30 seconds at a time. My sig contains a link to a script which TiVo owners can run (providing you have a bash prompt and know what you are doing). It is a variant of the same principle and uses TiVo's IR sending hardware to send backup at precisely 30 seconds past each minute, so as not to interfere with the normal scheduled channel changes which occur at around :55 (depending on fast/medium/slow user settings on the TiVo). what i need is a way of removing it forever. there's a back up button on the box itself, if i tape it down so that it's always pressed in, will this do it, or does it need to be repeatedly pressed? In that case what you ask is impossible unless you can persuade Sky to alter the EPG software to provide an "off" setting. Sky are vehemently against this, and Ofcom refuse to intervene. You will always see the dot for a few seconds at least. Having said that, I only ever see it on C4 and BBC3 these days. Can't remember when I last saw one on Sky One. It's present on Dream Team, unfortunately. Not at right at the start though, which caught me out, I checked the start to make sure there was no red dot, there wasn't, on watching the recording, however, it appeared after the first break. Not just a red dot either, but "Be on Dream Team" red letters on a white background IIRC :-( -- Sean Black |
