It was possibly relaunched to coincide with the Astra service - but Sky
was around 1984/5.

The original Sky Channel started in 1982 as a cable-only channel, see
http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/otherchannels/skychannel.html.

I think I still have an old decoder when Sky Channel encrypted for a short
time way before they launched on Astra

Sky started as "Satellite TV UK" back in 1978 which broadcast two
hours a day!

It was renamed "Sky Channel" in 1985 and the rest is history.
