Putting the unit in standby *does* stop the hard drive if the unit in question is a Directv Tivo, and wouldn't you know it - it is. If it's not a No, it doesn't. It stops *recording* in Standby. But that does not means the *drives* have stopped - the unit will still index data, do house cleaning, etc, which may call for disk I/O.
