DSP - newbie alert

Hi,

I have a 5.1 system on my PC. It has an external Dolby Digital/DTS/Pro
Logic decoder.

Do the DSP modes give you true surround - albeit a wider image, or do they
just split stereo channels?

How would I go about balancing my 5.1 speakers in a small room?

They use delays, phase shifting, reverb, etc. to try and recreate acoustics
of an environment. Most sound very aritificial to me. It is not true
discrete surround sound (nor is Prologic BTW, Dolby Digitial and DTS are
though).
