They didn't lie...they DO broadcast it in HD. It just wasn't HD to start
with. A legally defensible position.

If what you say is true, that ESPN HD isn't HD at all,
then that's pretty disgusting that the law allows them to
lie about their programming.

DirecTV claims that their NFL package is available in HD.
FOX and CBS produce the NFC/AFC games. Thing
is, FOX has no HD capability. Is DirecTV pulling a sneaker play,
showing SD and calling it HD?

DirecTV showed a CBS and two Fox games around channels 70-72 this
weekend. The CBS game was HD, and the Fox game was as advertised,
"Enhanced" (480P) Widescreen. I've never seen anything that claimed
Fox was HD.

ESPN shows their Sunday night game in HD. So basically, you can watch
3 HD games each weekend (counting Monday Night Football). That great
progress, considering you'd be lucky to view 1 last year.

Not only are they broadcasting an upconverted SD image, for most
of there programming, they are stretching it from 4:3 to 16:9. Looks
really stupid.

On 9/14 the two early games on DirecTV HD NFL Channels were NFC games.. FOX.
It's not true HDTV. IMO it looks real bad. The CBS games, Monday night on
ABC, and ESPN Sunday Night always look great to me. The first time I ever
saw the FOX enhanced content (whatever they call it) was the 9/7 games, I
was not impressed at all.

This Sunday (09/14) I watched 3 games in HD. The early game was on

DirecTV.
I was demo'ing it to some friends and thought it was quite a bit less than
spectacular. The resolution, color and clarity were very good, but the
"production", i.e., choice of shot angles, amount of zoom, etc. were not
particularly flattering to a 16x9 broadcast. (Non CBS game)

They seem to be making a bit of progress. The score scroll during
Sportscenter is really sharp. So are the graphics screens. But when
they show the guys in studio, it's not sharp.

On NFL games, their skycam is not in HDTV but all other cameras appear
to be.

Last night, on MNF, a view from the blimp looked to be HDTV. Last week,
on either ESPN or ABC, the blimp camera wasn't HDTV. So they seem to be
gradually coverting their bases.

yeah, no kidding! In fact, for the reason you just gave,
I'm very tempted to go satellite just to get those
three games. I've seen exactly one HD football game,
and it was fantastic. Also, the 16:9 ratio allows you
to see way more of the field, a big plus in itself.
