I bought a Pace twin about 8 months ago and frankly, I've about had enough
of it. The bugs are attrocious and I can't even guarantee receiving a channel, let alone record it. I don't want a Humax 8000 as it's not a twin, so what other twin HDD recorders are available and what are their pro and cons? Is, for example, the Thomson a twin? and is it any good, I never see it mentioned in the forums. Thanks in advance. I,MM |

See http://www.mythtv.org. Not for the faint hearted, though. Basically you bung two DTT cards in a PC, install Linux on it, and then bung on MythTV and everything it depends on. Then all the fun starts in getting it to work. I'm about it give it a go myself. I'm attempting to install in on a spare PC tonight, but that's only currently equipped with an analogue capture card. |

If you want a really high quality TV output (RGB SCART) then a PC with an XCard and a DVB-T PCI card running JovePlayer (now renamed TVEdia) produces excellent results. Takes a bit of work - and requires you to run Windows (the XCard doesn't have Linux drivers) - but the quality is excellent - marginally better than my Philips DVD recorder and my Pace Freeview and Pace DSat receivers. Is, for example, the Thomson a twin? and is it any good, I never see it mentioned in the forums. It's not been out long. Thomson are a good make though. I've got a Thomson DHD4000 - been very reliable. Has two tuners, allows recording of two programmes at the same time while watching a third. Can pause two TV channels at the same time to allow switching between (very useful for watching the cricket!!). HD is 40GB. Been very pleased with it. I have had no failed recordings, no zero minute recordings etc. HDD's have been replaced by other users up to 120gb. Some of the issues with it a- - Live-pause buffer is only 30 minutes (no user options to increase this) - the unit is reasonably noisy (there is a fan in there which creates most of the noise) - you'd have to hear it in your physical surroundings to say whether it is acceptably quiet or not. I have it next to my TV on top of my hi-fi separates, and I can hear it when the TV is off but not much more than that. Others in the digitalspy forums have them in cabinets and say that you can't hear it at all. -It uses the 4TV program guide, which is only updated overnight, so it doesn't pick up on any schedule changes that are made during the day. - Can't (yet) start watching something that is recording from the beginning (e.g. arrive late to watch a film, rewind it before it has finished), though the competing Fusion box should get this soon, and there is a suspicion that they share the same software - Sometimes the MHEG crashes so that you can't get it to display unless you wait until the next morning (the program guide download also appears to reset the machine) or physically unplug it Check out the Personal Video Recorders forum on digitalspy for much more activity about this and the Fusion FVRT1000 (http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...splay.php?f=35) Cheers! I'm not sure the Pace Twin is actually made any more. There are a few other
options, including one from Thomson. A half-decent line up is actually available on the dixons.co.uk site. Can the card slot in the Pace Twin take a card for Top Up TV? : I have had occasional problems recording but other than that Twins is an excellent piece of kit hich I would not want to be without. That's my own feeling. I have the occasional problem with my Twins not doing what it's meant to. But it's still worth the money I paid for it and I wouldn't give it back for a refund. That makes it difficult to complain about it. Simon. -- Using pre-release version of newsreader. Please tell me if it does weird things. |
