Default DIVx DVD Players?

Is this hate because he knows more than you or becasue it's to much work to
find out what he's talking about? I hate lazy retails " sales people". I
hate know it all "retail salespeople". I can say these thing becasue I've
been in retail CE for 16 years.

Has anyone heard of a DVD player that can play DIVx disks?

There are at least two: one by a Danish (?) company called Kiss, and
an upcoming one by Lite-On. People over at doom9.org have been playing
with the Kiss model for a while now. You can also check out a bit of
info on both these players in the August 2003 issue of Maximum PC
magazine. The general gist is that both DivX and Xvid are MPEG-4, so
they'll play in these players. But I think there are some complaints
about the Kiss (in particular) not being able to handle all the
options that some people are using when encoding under DivX. I don't
know if that means those files don't play at all, or whether they just
play sub-optimally.

The Lite-On is also a fully-featured progressive scan DVD player. MSRP
is $200US.

I hate old nerds.

I'm pretty knowledgeable. I just can't stand people who come in and pretend
to know what they're talking about, when they just read an article on the
internet. That's the kind of customer I have disdain for.

55 and older, depending also on your mental age.

Well, in this case, the customer did know more than you.... :-)

The flipside of that, of course, is the snot-nosed salesperson who
pretends to know what he (it's almost always a he) is talking about,
when he just read an article on the Internet. That's the kind of
salesperson I have disdain for!

Oh, good: I've got a number of years to go yet, then. Especially if
you're counting by mental age...

Come on guys, get serious here for a minute. Is a DIVx DVD player even worth
anyone's time?

It *must* be, if there is more than one manufacturer now making one!

Who the hell needs something like that?

I dunno -- but they're a customer, and isn't the customer always
right?? Who needs a DVD burner? Who needs a portable FireWire hard
drive? Same argument...

In a mass market like
I work in, it's not relevant, it's not profitable, and it's not feasible for
me to research or spend my time on, except for this discussion. I'm not even
going to follow up on it.

Oh, boy, does that sound arrogant. I can imagine you'd have held the
same sort of position circa 1983 regarding CD, and circa 1996 about
DVD -- reminds me of Bill Gates' famous "why would anyone need more
than 640k?"

What's wrong with filing away the information that a) standalond DivX
players now exist; and b) they're made by a few off-brands; but c)
Lite-On, a respected drive maker, is also about to release one. I
think I'd be happy going into your (or any other) store and hearing
that much detail. Why not be slightly *ahead* of the knowledge curve,
instead of pooh-poohing the whole idea?

Just out of curiosity, as a "mass market" guy, what *is* "relevant and
profitable"? What *are* you spending your time on? What *is* "feasible
for you to research"?? I have no particular bone to pick with you (and
those are mostly rhetorical questions), but your arguments do sound
pretty contrived.

I could be wrong, as I didn't pay close attention, but yesterday I was
wandering around Tescos and I'm pretty sure I say a Technika DVD player for
just under £50 that played back DIVX. The thing caught my eye because it was
very slimline and looked quite nice from a distance and I was curious to see
what it was. Up close the finish was a little rough but it didn't look bad
for £50 and I think it said it was DIVX compatible. I've checked on their
website and can't see it listed.

I can certainly see a market for a DIVX player. I've watched a few DIVX
movies and the quality is not bad. As a laptop owner it would cost me
upwards of £250 to add an external DVD burner to my setup but I could easily
burn DIVX to CD and watch those. At the moment my home videos get archived
to s-VHS but it would probably result in better quality and durability to
burn to DIVX CDs. Outputting from the laptop to the TV does not result in a
good picture for movies, even though the laptop display looks great. I'm
sure a DIVX DVD player would do a much better job, and with better handling
of widescreen material.

Just my 2p's worth.

Not a Technika, but here's one DIVX player....

I have a comment or two for the original poster about his attitude but will
restrain myself.
