Default BBC NEWS: Broadcaster BSkyB is planning to launch a free-to-air satellite package

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3790127.stm

So there. This tempted me to look at Sky's packages on their site -*&$!
they're expensive, all I'd want is the music channels and Discovery and I'd
be damned if I paid more than £4 a month for that. It makes me think that
TopUp TV isn't as bad value as I thought - though it is turd.

"Launched in 2002, Freeview has become the UK's number-two provider of
digital TV services, with 3.5 million subscribers, compared with Sky's seven
million."

Surely Freeview doesn't have ANY subscribers...

There seems to be vagueness over whether you'll have to pay SKY for
installation in order to get the service. Say, for instance, I have a
minidish fitted at my own cost and I own my own satellite digibox already,
will SKY divvy up a card for their free service or will they insist on me
having another installation (or paying for an installation that I don't
need)?

Will ITV, Channel4, Ch5 be on this package, or will we still have to sign up
to one of the subscription packages to receive these via satellite? If
they're trying to offer a competitor to Freeview, they'll have to back-pedal
on this policy.

Will I have to plug the box into a telephone line? Hope not.

Still, interesting - it would get me to install satellite in my new home (if
the above conditions are met) when I otherwise wouldn't consider it.

After the lies I was given from ITV Digital (you'll never have a blank
screen, & I've still got that letter) I would not on principle subscribe to
another DTTV service (Top-Up TV aka ITV Digital Mk2).
I like the service I get from Sky and I like the service I get from
Freeview.
Regards Mike.
