Default D-theatre movies significantly better quality than dvd?

I've been looking at the JVC d-vhs deck and I noticed there are quite
a few movies out for it in D-theater, at least more than I thought
there were. I have a 57" Hitachi HD set and I'm curious as to the
quality difference in the movies- dvd vs. D-theater. I don't have
access to HD programming where I live so I basically live off dvd's.
Would D-theater movies be jaw-dropping compared to dvd or merely
noticably better?

I would imagine that a movie at 1080 would be fantastic compared to
480 lines but I'm worried that some movie studios just slap "1080" on
the box and don't really put much effort into the encoding. I've seen
big-release dvd's that were disapointing.

My tv doesn't have firewire, only DVI. Will the component outputs be
sufficient quality for the movies? That's probably my biggest worry.

I'm also aware of the risk involved in investing in a technology that
might not take off. I'm willing to risk it considering the deck has
firewire and eventually I will have OTA HD to record. Thanks

I think you have a bigger worry. I hope someone who owns the D-VHS
deck you are investigating will provide information backed by specific
experience. Those component connections are for the VHS and S-VHS
capabilities of the deck. It can only handle ATSC (i.e. digital TV)
signals through its firewire ports. That means both input and output.
You need a TV that has firewire in and out or a set top box that has
firewire in and out since the D-VHS decks do not include ATSC tuners
or transport stream decoders (to keep the cost down and reduce
duplication).

For instance you could buy a Samsung SIR-T165 STB which you could
connect to your HD-ready set with component video (which should handle
HD just fine). The STB would be connected to your D-VHS using a
firewire cable. Firewire is a bus so one connector should suffice for
input and output. A drawback to this is that if the T165 is your only
ATSC tuner you could not tune into a different program from the one
you are recording. Obviously it works fine if you are busy doing
something else and you could view other program sources like a DVD or
an NSTC tuner. Good luck. Oh, and by the way, HD source material is
much better than DVD. I don't have D-Theater so I can't comment on
that specifically but it is supposed to be even better (i.e. higher
bandwidth) than ATSC HDTV.

I have a real HM30000, and it provides HDTV through the component outputs.
The component output can be used for VHS, SVHS and DVHS (HD,SD.) The
Svideo and composite I/Os are useful only for VHS,SVHS and DVHS(SD).

Thanks for the "real world" correction. Now I can see that they are
claiming: "Built-in MPEG2 Decoder for Direct Connection to HDTV". It
is also claiming: "Full Spec HDTV Compatible (with all 18 ATSC
broadcasting formats) " which almost makes it sound like there is an
ATSC tuner built in. Is that the case or does it rely on an external
tuner for OTA digital content?
