Default optical in socket

want to connect my xbox to my philips dvd home cinema system, so i can have
the surround sound from games

found that i need an optical in the back of the home cinema dvd player, i
would have thought this would be a standard socket

i have a digital in socket but its the same shaped socket as an aux in, and
not for an optical cable, ive seen converter for optical digital cable to
aux cable, but at £26 its a bit much

are ther any solutions? or should i invest in a digital receiver

I once saw a device to convert co-axial digital to optical digital made
from a miniature IR LED and the barrel of a Biro - perhaps the same
thing could be done in reverse using an IR phototransistor and an
op-amp... but perhaps this is more what you require?

Double check that it is an "digital-in". Many assume that the digital audio
connector on an integrated dvd/surround amp is an input as they can't
imagine that it's an output. In fact most are outputs as this allows you to
upgrade to a proper surround amp and use the DVD part of the integrated unit
as a source for the surround amp.
