Default Shopping for HT Audio System

As a newbie, I been asking some questions in this group and have already
learned a lot about how to go about acquiring my HT system. As a long time
wanna-be audiophile, my focus is more on sound than image right now. It
occurs to me that whether I end up with a pre-packaged (out of the box)
system, or separate receiver and speakers, or even a completely mix and
match system, I should be able to start the HT audio shopping process by
taking some high quality music CD's that I am very familiar with, and
comparing them on various HT audio systems. This has always been my
starting point for any sort of audio equipment shopping. Of course, the
material content would need to be full range with great dynamic range, but
I've got lots of audiophile and other recordings that meet those criteria.
I should be able to narrow the field pretty quickly this way. Any thoughts
or advice?

What is your budget (please itemize or enumerate)?

Damn, you're funny.

Yeah. Bose. It's got your name on it. :-

New to HT, not to audio, David. Are you stalking me? Don't make me get a
restraining order.

P.S. The Leach DBA monoblock sub amp I built has my name on it. I've never
owned any Bose equipment. Probably won't start now.

I don't really know how much I'll spend on HT audio. It depends in part on
how much of my main audio system I'll end up using using as part of the HT
system. Overall, I don't see myself going over $1500 on HT audio. Of
course, this may not be done all at once (which of course means the total
could climb over time, you know how that goes).

You will soon find out that you can't get much useful info from
in-store demos. About all you can find out is if the speakers will
play loudly enough and have plenty of bass. Anything more subtle will
not show up until you've lived with the speakers in your home for a
time. As for the electronics, there's little choose between receivers
and players; buy by price and features.

Like HiFi, you can spend a small fortune on the speakers... so it depends
on how good of a set of speakers you want.

If you're not all that picky, JBL Northridges are cheap. Or perhaps Athena?
There's also Mirage Omnisats - which are about 400.00 a pair.

Yeah, take along a DVD of your favorite movie, one with a kicking
soundtrack.
How your music sounds is important of course but for absolutly the best
sound you wont get it from a HT setup, thats not what most HTS are designed
for, although they will play music quite adequatly, they just wont measure
up to A TRUE hi-fidelity tasked system
You can compromise, a set of real high fi speakers hooked up to your front
left and right channels, with some decent amp powering them, doing double
duty as the front two speakers of a hi-fi and the front left-right of a HT
system, As an old hi-fi dog I find this livable, Diana Krall seems to be in
my room when I play her SACD, BUT I do miss the days of my 75w per channel
stereo hooked up to a REAL set of speakers, but living in the real world a
compromise is nesessary, usually for reasons of cost
Just remember, theres no way a movie soundtrack even approaches reality, its
just a bunch of foly and digital effects with the voices of actors dubbed
in, it just has to sound good, not accurate. A soundtrack with a lot of
helicopters usually will give you a great idea of what type of imaging the
system has(modern movie makers LOVE helicopters, they would have put one in
shakespear with love if they could have figured out how)
