Default Picture freezing - any ideas

I checked out post code for availability, purchased a Grundig GDT2000
Freeview set top box this morning, and had an aerial guy install new high
gain aerial, and new run of twin screened coax. So far so good. However

the
BBC Channels are "freezing". ITV, Sky and other channels as well as Radio
are all fine. I live about 6 miles North of Darlington in County Durham.

What software revision are you running? I had problems before mine upgraded
to version 2.2 about 6 weeks ago, since when it has been fine.

Have you looked at the channel numbers of the five multiplexes (see the
BBC's website) and the aerial groups to see whether a grouped aerial is
available? AIUI a grouped aerial is more efficient than a wideband aerial.
I replaced my wideband with a Group E aerial and this boosted the signal
strength.

Paul

Thanks for the help

The first one, came with 1.9 and downloaded 2.1, yep I've obtained a
replacement already :0)

The replacement box came with 2.1 preloaded and says that there are no
upgrades available. When checking out the tech info, it also indicates that
hardware versions come into play. You have me slightly concerned when you
say you have 2.2 If that is so, it probably explains why my box was
allegedly £20 off list price at Dixons i.e. possibly old hardware spec and
unable to upgrade. Maybe you could clarify this?

Having said this. The new box, preloaded with 2.1 is displaying new traits.
Initially it behaved like the first, i.e. giving us problems with BBC
Channels. As the night progresed the freezing problem became less and less
apparent. It may now have gone :0)

I've decided to leave the set top box switched on all night, not the most
environmentally friendly thing to do, but what the hell. My hifi amp has
not been switched off bar power cuts, for the last 2 years. I am a great
believer in electronics maintaining a steady state. I am now trying to
establish whether or not it is a box issue or a signal one, i.e. the BBC
transmission of certain channels was problematic today. Tomorrow may tell.

I've also noticed that when switching back to anaologue, albeit pass through
on the box, that BBC1 picture in particular is not as good quality, where as
other channels are fine. Maybe a very minor re-alignment of the aerial may
do the trick, then again it may be transmission related (ain't life good).

Irrespective of this, again thanks for the advice about the software revs.

Any body any ideas why this might be the case, and better still what the
remedy may be?

Advice I have been given by the aerial guy is

a) swap set top box for another (same make)
b) possibly move aerial higher (it is already sticking out loud and proud
above my house rooftop, though there large trees behind the houses over

the
road in the direction of the signal)
c) possibly install a booster on the line between aerial and TV

Any other constructive advice would be well received.

I guess I won't be pressing that red button for anything on BBC this

evening
:0)

Question

a) Has the rigger pointed the aerial in line - you'd be surprised how many
can't used a compass!
b) Are you using the best Tx for your area? Bilsdale against Pontop or vice
versa?
c) Are you using the low numbered channels or those in the 800's? The best
signal will come from the low numbered signal, the 800+ are any alternative
and probably not so good.

In theory as it uses 16QAM BBC should be better than ITV which still uses
64QAM and is thus not so robust. Poor BBC probably indictes more fundamental
problems.
