Thus spaketh Dave Plumb:
magazine is free. I seem to remember in times gone by it had a
price on the front cover but was included (forced on you) as part
of your

subscription.
Didn't the magazine have a cover price so they could avoid paying tax
on that part of your subscription? Maybe this isn't the case now. I
must admit I never read the thing but I'd rather they sent it out
instead of giving them the saving of not sending it out.

Interesting. My letter says nothing whatsoever about the Sky
Magazine - just the same stuff about the silly "Sky Kids" leaflet.
They've been

Mine doesn't mention the "opt-in", neither does it mention the "sky
kids" either! The first three paragraphs are about Sky Movies and the
last makes mention of the TV Guide and Search & Scan to find out what
time stuff starts. I guess the letter is tailored depending on your
package, and the mag is of little use to non-movie subscribers so
maybe it's those who are being asked to opt-in?

I'm surprised they've sent it this month since my 30 days notice to
cancel is up on 2nd Jan. Maybe they'll want it back I know they
want 1 day of next months subscription pro-rata as I cancelled too
late.

Cheers,
Dave

Sky were forced to pay back the VAT they tried to scam out of paying over the
years.

When I last cancelled Sky I still received the magazine for 3 or 4 months!

What's the betting this is another way of hiking prices? i.e. you
ask for a magazine, now pay for it, despite the fact that you used
to pay for it anyway.....................

Personally, I wont miss it.........

I haven't got the January mag yet, but I think that having a cover
price on free magazines was some sort of VAT fiddle.

Yep, sorry to reply to my own post, but here are the details

http://makeashorterlink.com/?X2573112A

And they had to pay back the VAT they had tried to avoid paying over the
years!

Sky didn't "scam" anyone. Not paying VAT on part of a service provision
because it's exempt is perfectly legal and legitimate.

The VAT tribunal's ruling was that the magazine wasn't a substantive part of
the service, so wasn't really worth anything.

It felt like it ... they supplied me with a magazine I didn't want, and then
pretended I was paying for it separately, just so they could claim back part
of the money I already paid tax on! Now if it were possible for me to say "I
don't want that", and then they knock the couple of quid off a month, fair
enough...

Sounds like a scam to me...

I think that anyone reading the magazine would come to that conclusion
quite quickly. I can't imagine anyone anywhere being prepared to
actually buy it over the counter for real money.

Of course it was a scam, that was the only reason they brought out the mag!

They didn't want to pay VAT on part of the subscription, so they tried the No
VAT mag scam, just that they didn't allow people to have a reduced
subscription if they didn't want the magazine.
