Default 12 Month Contract?

Hi all, hope I'm not re-treading heavily trodden ground here... But was
wondering if someone could help me...

I'm a student, and an ex-housemate of ours had a sky account, he's now
moved out and cancelled his contract, but has left us the box so that we
can use it to get a new account. I rang Sky this morning so that I could
set up a new account on the old box but was told that I would have to
sign up for a 12 month contract, despite not needing any "free" box or
installation.

I always assumed you'd only have to sign up for 12 months if you were
having a free box, much like getting a free mobile on a contract; I
don't see why we should have to sign up for a full 12 months when we
only want 7, do they not want our money?

What I'd like to know is, if I push the issue with a manager or
supervisor or something, am I likely to be able to get the 7 month
contract that I want? It's ridiculous that all I want is to give them
money for 7 months with very little effort on their side and they're
unwilling...

Any advice appreciated

for once I think the Sky monkey is correct. 12 months minimum.

No. You are a new subscriber and, as such, are down for a minimum 12
month deal. However, this does give you the right to a new free box
and installation. So take them.

Of course, if you move overseas after 7 months then Sky would have to
cancel your sub under their own T&Cs.

Then you could sell them and use that to pay back the 5 monhs you wont be
using.
