I know there are many previous messages like this, but this is quite
specific, wondered if anyone else has had the problem. I have had an ongoing problem for ages (now on my 3rd box) but am now out of warranty. about once or twice a week I have recordings fail for no reason or recordings that only play for about 30 minutes. The space on the planner is going down (currently 54% available) but the programs only take about 20%. Also had the machine stuck in standby mode. Expecting the usual hard disk problems, have reloaded, cleared the disk, reset the planner etc all to no avail. Finally replaced the hard drive (same size 40gb - almost the same model) and settled down hopefully to trouble free recording. No, same problems, cannot be the disk drive as it is brand new and I doubt if the box is at fault (although it is possible). Has anyone had this type of problem ? Does anyone know how often the fan is supposed to come on ? I don't think I have ever seen it running. I am beginning to think it is overheating and breaking the drive. Am a bit loath to get the box replaced until I know what cost the Sky+ 160 comes out as. Michael |

Michael It must be the box and overheating sounds like the most likely cause, though I suppose a bad disk controller is a possibility as well. The fan on mine seems to run quite often so you might be right in your guess. I have had this problem just a very few times, cured by a rebuild of one sort or another for many months. A couple of things you could do (a) the Jomtien method of threatening to take them to the small claims court to see if you can get a new one (never mind its out of warranty at only just over a year it shouldnt fail), or (2) see if the fan is dead, and replace it for a tenner. There was a post about the new box cost, £350-ish is what I recall. -- Tumbleweed email replies not necessary but to contact use; tumbleweednews at hotmail dot com |

You are in an even better position if it is your third box (though that in itself is unusual and suggests some other problem). about once or twice a week I have recordings fail for no reason or recordings that only play for about 30 minutes. That could be the flaky Sky+ EPG. Or maybe not. The space on the planner is going down (currently 54% available) but the programs only take about 20%. Rebuild the planner. Failing that reset the disk (soft and hard). Also had the machine stuck in standby mode. It happens. Expecting the usual hard disk problems, have reloaded, cleared the disk, reset the planner etc all to no avail. Try again. No, same problems, cannot be the disk drive as it is brand new and I doubt if the box is at fault (although it is possible). You instantly had the same problem or did it start off OK and get worse over time? What is the quality reading on the two LNBs? Does anyone know how often the fan is supposed to come on ? I don't think I have ever seen it running. This isn't right at all. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these.
