Hi Jomtien
I followed the link you posted here to the FAQ at: http://tinyurl.com/yvnsy I have done a little re-working of the FAQ, updating links, deleting outdated links and adding some hypertext links; hope you approve? I have posted it to a webserver for your perusal and if you are happy with it maybe you could replace official FAQ with this one: http://www.usenetz.clara.net/FAQ_uk.tech.tv.sky.htm It could still be made more user-friendly if others have the time ;-) Cheers john |

Hi John, You have been working hard. Haven't been able to read all 54 paras but it is looking good. Hope this doesn't sound too pedantic, but could you change the wording in the first answer? From: wipe the gold contacts of the card carefully with a dry tissue to remove any static build-up. (Note: use a tissue, not a jumper!) to something like this: wipe the gold contacts of the card carefully with a dry tissue to remove any grease etc.. Note: use a tissue, not a jumper so as not to expose the card electronics to static discharge. I promise you the change will be appreciated by those of us who work with electronics! Graham. |

The link in my sig that you quote above is a link to the Google cache of the latest Usenet version of the FAQ. I used to maintain a web version and published the link to this html version of the FAQ in my sig but some time ago I deliberately chose to use only the Google one and to no longer publish the html one. This was for various reasons related to pop-ups and Gator, and in order to retain the Usenet connection which was in danger of being swamped by the galloping increase in web-based FAQs and forums (fora) that often have a commercial link. I haven't looked at your specific page but if anyone thinks that there are any changes needed to the Usenet Sky Digital FAQ as maintained by me then they are welcome to discuss them in the FAQ thread, as mentioned in the FAQ itself. After due discussion and depending on group comments any suggested changes may be implemented and credit for contributions will be given. Anyone can port the current Usenet FAQ to a webpage as long as they don't change anything in it. Changes should only be made after due discussion here. As I mentioned above, everyone is welcome to contribute to such discussions and I will try and ensure that all suggestions have equal weight. Oh, and before anyone gets needlessly upset as a previous well-intentioned poster did: I never communicate by private email in these groups. There are no exceptions to this. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. The Sky Digital FAQ: http://tinyurl.com/yvnsy How to get UK TV overseas: http://tinyurl.com/6p73 Fed up with logos / red buttons? : http://logofreetv.org/ BBC gone? : http://www.astra2d.co.uk/ ---- Only the truth as I see it. Fair enough, I wasn't aware of your decision to use only the plain text FAQ on Google. I haven't looked at your specific page but if anyone thinks that there are any changes needed to the Usenet Sky Digital FAQ as maintained by me then they are welcome to discuss them in the FAQ thread, as mentioned in the FAQ itself. I did read the FAQ however there is no mention in it about discussing this in the FAQ thread; the wording is "This FAQ is rubbish. What can I do? Write a better one or contribute to the improvement of this one by posting about it in the group in which you read it". As your Tiny link (http://tinyurl.com/yvnsy) auto-directs the reader to http://groups.google.fr had I followed that instruction to post in the group in which I read it I would have posted to Google's French site, which I didn't think would be helpful. I thought it more appropriate to make an informal approach to you outside the FAQ thread as I wanted to communicate directly with the person who maintained the document rather that start a debate in the FAQ thread which has 531 identical articles. Changes should only be made after due discussion here It would be helpful to say that in the FAQ rather than inviting people to "Write a better one" - I have now removed the HTML version I did. Oh, and before anyone gets needlessly upset as a previous well-intentioned poster did: I never communicate by private email in these groups. There are no exceptions to this. Fair enough. Thank-you for all your efforts in maintaining and publicising the uk.media.tv.sky FAQ which, as you say in the FAQ, is a 'thankless task'. john |

Which bizarrely is a link to a French website http://groups.google.fr/ It may be that at the time of creating the link I was using a laptop with its Windows regional settings set to France (Google responds to this) though it makes no real difference in the end. The reference is to the original usenet article and this is cached by Google US no matter which national Google portal one uses to access it. As your Tiny link (http://tinyurl.com/yvnsy) auto-directs the reader to http://groups.google.fr had I followed that instruction to post in the group in which I read it I would have posted to Google's French site, which I didn't think would be helpful. You don't seem to understand. You may have seen the cached message on a French Google server but you could just as well have seen it on the US, UK, Italian, German or South African servers, or indeed any others. The original article is in uk.tech.tv.sky and any follow-up would have gone there, no matter where it was posted from or whether it was posted via Google Groups or not. Changes should only be made after due discussion here It would be helpful to say that in the FAQ rather than inviting people to "Write a better one" - I have now removed the HTML version I did. You didn't need to remove your work: you could have just posted your proposed changes and started a discussion about it here. This was the whole point of my reply. I will be happy to participate in any such discussion and, who knows, others may also be interested. Don't all rush at once though. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. He has set out a way of people to make suggestions. Not just "a" way but the universally accepted usenet way, if there is such a thing. The general procedure for group FAQs is to discuss them in the group and to achieve some sort of consensus. This seems very fair and reasonable to me. I've certainly always tried to adhere to it and would never try to deny anyone the right to say what they want in any such discussion. Sadly many potential contributors don't seem to understand this and, for no reason obvious to me, get upset. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these.
