Default Newbie SKY + hard disk upgrade

I apologise in advance if these questions have been asked a million
time before. However, what with the recent s/w update I wonder if any
of the old answers have changed.

I have had Sky+ for about 6 months - its the white box and I assume
its the most modern possible. I have seen people mention a certain
Maxtor 120GB which should work - and that capacity should be fine.

Here are my questions:

- Does it invalidate my warranty?
- Are future s/w updates likely to break my box if I have a new HD in?
(i.e. do Sky check - can they check etc?)
- Does anything not work/look odd if I fit the new hard disk ?(space
remaining indicator etc)
- Are there any other potential problems?

Many thanks!

yes

No more than if you had a 40GB drive fitted. If it packs in, just put your
old drive in, and call the engineer out.

If you have the lastest s/w - no

- Are there any other potential problems?

As long as you have the latest s/w where the model (?) number ends with A8
(NOT A08!)

Likely? No. In fact the Sky+ firmware is becoming more compatible with
larger disks as Sky look to bring out their own larger disk box.

Everything now works correctly, more or less.

Not really. Overheating perhaps?

OK guys thanks for that. I understand that it will invalidate my
warranty, but will SKY still deal with me if I put the old hard disk
back in as and when a problem arises? I.e. does opening the box mean
that the warranty is void even before I mess around with the hard
disk?

Some models have a "void if broken" sticker over the cover. Whether
Sky care about this, I don't know.

Bear in mind that the hard drive is far and away the most likely thing
to go wrong (especially in that it will *certainly* go wrong one day,
and probably within just a very few years). So you can probably fix
nearly all Sky+ faults yourself by fitting a new drive. The next most
likely thing to fail will be a tuner, and they cost about £30 to
replace. You have two.

I have a torx T10 in my toolkit but it appears a special security one is
needed to remove sky+ cover. Will Maplins have one ?

Places like maplins will sell a kit of security bits.

Note that a flat bladed screwdriver of the right width can be used on
a security torx screw.

Indeed. A Torx bit with a central recess.

Will Maplins have one ?

Surely. CPC do.
