Default One for the FAQ? Adult channels

Colin Wilson wrote:

It would be possible but would it be suitable? The FAQ is for
frequently asked questions. This subject doesn't come up at all often.

About the only question that is frequent about the adult channels is
the Pout method for getting a new FTV card and this is so precarious
that I haven't bothered putting it in.

ie. are there any free ones
available without getting a second dish, and how the process actually
works - some say contact (blah) for access, some simply ask for a pin no.
Does the pin no. just bypass age restrictions, or is it a charging
mechanism that you aren`t warned about ?

I think that the info you want is included on the welcome screens of
the individual channels. The different channels bill in different ways
and as such the question isn't really suited for an all-in-one FAQ
answer.

On a separate note I was appalled to see the content broadcast on some
of the "free-view" trailers on the 9xx channels when I was channel
hopping the other evening. Many of the images were quite revolting and
certainly completely unsuitable for uncontrolled broadcast at 9pm. No
attempt is made even to use the laughably inadequate PIN feature to
restrict viewing to those who want to view.
Britain has its priorities seriously out of order in allowing this.

That was my point about pin no. requirements only - there was no welcome
message - just enter a pin. Sky 18+ does this IIRC

Not to mention the programme descriptions which are also accessible by anyone
using the remote not just subscribers to those channels.

Channel hopping through the 9xx, which you know is porn? And you are
surprised to see some "revolting" images?

Maybe you should move to America, where the sight of a exposed breast
stopped the whole country for a week.

They're plenty of porn channels on NTL aswell, maybe you should listen to
the radio, just to be on the safe side?

We didn't see them as we didn't subscribe to them, you just got a black
screen saying "you are not subscribed to this channel". I don't object to
porn, just that I'd like to control whether or not it appears on my TV.

Then supervise your children - don't ask for a nanny state to do it for
you.

I would be very concerned that they may catch sight of/hear something
undesirable in the 671-677 range, which are arguably far more dangerous
channels, but I'm not shouting around here asking for it to be banned.

I'm not asking for them to be banned, I just want to be able to prevent them
being viewed in my home. And as for supervising my kids - I don't expect to
have to be on standby all evening ready to rush into the living room as soon
as one of them decides to watch tv, to check which channel they switch to.

I have nothing against showing anything at all on TV. However nothing
should be thrust down the throats of those who don't want to see it,

You're against oral sex then?

LOL, possibly the most inappropriate turn of phrase you could have come up
with - nearly fell off me chair when I read that

Perhaps because you got there after the start of the film? AFAIK Sky
18+ is PPV "adult" films from Sky and as such are just added to your
regular bill like any of the 7xx channels. I expect that before the
start of the film you would have seen some sort of barker, as with the
7xx channels.

Thanks for that... that`s the sort of info I was after, and clarifies the
situation neatly :-}
