Default New 160GB Sky+. This is real folks!!!!

Woohoo! This looks genuine. See page 67 of this link (it'll take
a while to load, it's a big PDF.

http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_...site040804.pdf

For once I get a bit of luck. I was literally going to buy a Sky+
box today after having waited over a year for them to release
an upgrade. Imagine how annoyed I would have been if
this had been released tomorrow!

Well, a 160gig hard disk is only £30 more than a 40gig one - retail price!

So, I'm starting to suspect that the box might be a little bit more than
"just" a Sky+ with a bigger hard disk.

It's the 2 x USB ports that are the most intruiging to me. Any thoughts?

We're clearly on exactly the same thought path throughout the entire
analysis.

No, I've no idea what the USB ports could be for.

AIUI the 120GB limit is caused by the interface (ATA) and not something that
a simple software upgrade will cure

Well, it's firmware, in that it's the protocol that goes over the ribbon
cable that can't handle addressing beyond 137gig of a disk.

If I were designing a new Sky+ today I would design it with a Serial
ATA interface rather than a standard IDE interface.

But you're not paying £10 a month for the privilege of owning the Panasonic.

If you are refering to the £10 sky+ charge, that went months ago!

No, it didn't. It has been waived for some users who already have a
high subscription but it still exists.

Sorry Nigel, still not with you. As far as I understand it, if you
have a SKY+ box you do not pay the stupid £10 surcharge. I think one
of the conditions is that you have to be on a minimum package though
(around £30?)

Correct. At present I have the Family package at 20 pounds per month. If I buy a
Sky+ box I would need to pay an extra 10 pounds per month just to use the
recording facilities. I do not think that 10 pounds per month to use something I
already own is good value. Neither do I think it good value to spend an extra 10
pounds per month for extra channels of sport that I am uninterested in or movies
that I prefer on DVD. So either way I need to pay extra 10 pounds a month stupid
surcharge to use my own Sky+ box.

You've been done on the panasonic E85, got mine at Costco for £320 and
that was over a year ago.....I believe they are about £250 now....

Are you sure you don't mean E55 (or E50 at that time)? I didn't think the
E85 was released a year ago. If it was the E85 then you got a stunning deal.
Pricerunner shows the cheapest price as £421. The E55 is currently down
to £207.

Nope E85....says so on the tin.....

In that case congratulations, you got an absolutley amazing deal on that. There
is nowhere that is selling them anywhere close to that anymore.

By the way, how do you find it? Is there any noise from the hard drive? How
good are the editing facilities?

When these new boxes come out, they will not have the 17min problem thats
for sure.

However, when sky do a software upgrade they can target particular boxes ie,
Verson number, OS type etc.

Therefore, all the new boxes could have a SWupgrade to cure the 17min
problem, leaving all the exisiting V1 and V2 boxes with the problem,
therefore encouraging you to by a new box.....

Just a thought !

A new 160GB box must mean new software, as AFAIK you can't put
anything bigger than a 120GB drive in a current box. The $64,000
question is - will V2 boxes get the new software, curing the 17 minute
bug (fingers crossed!)?
