Default Freeview without subscription

I seem to remember somebody saying that if I cancelled my sky
subscription then I could still pick up the freeview through the
existing kit (digibox is a couple of years old now)? Can anyone
confirm this?

Yes. In the FAQ. It is NOT Freeview though. Freeview has nothing
whatsoever to do with satellite.

If you cancel Sky the smartcard will be left enabled for ITV (but not ITV2),
C4 and C5.

This does NOT give the same channel selection as Freeview (which is the DTT
system) but includes many other channels which you can test by simply removing
the card!

What about BBC1 & BBC2? I noticed that if you pull the card out
completely then you still get the beeb.

None of the BBC channels use any encryption at all so they will work without
any smartcard at all (and even with a non-Sky DSAT receiver)
