FTA channels are FTA.

You don't need any card.

FTA (Free To Air) channels: BBC TV, Sky News, CNN, EuroNews, Shopping
and just about all radio require no card.

FTV (Free To View) channels are 'subscription free'. They require an FTV card
(But no one issues these any more)

There are only three FTV channels on Sky. These are ITV-1, C4 and Five

Sky never supplied these cards: the BBC and, latterly, the FTV people
did.
See the FAQ.

For the FTV channels (not the FTA channels) you will need to find a
used card or sign up either to Sky or to one of the extra channels
like Zee or Pout.

ITV-1, C4 and Five are scrambled just why this is very strange,in my

opinion these channels are important to my viewing taste,if anybody on here
can put me on the right road to obtaining a viewing card it would be much
appreciated,is ITV-2 available without a card,many thanks.

They are encrypted (in theory) to restrict viewing to the UK only.
All three stations have their programming supplied to them on the
understanding that they cannot be viewed outside the UK.

The BBC decided to ditch Sky's encryption, and go FTA almost a year
ago. They probably pay more for their programming rights as a result, and
it's rumoured that Fox refused to sell them the third series of '24' because
of their FTA status.

However Sky's encryption service is expensive, it's rumoured that
ITV *might* follow the BBC's lead when their present contract
with Sky expires later this year?

You can register with Pout's pay as you view service (soft porn channel) for 9 quid,
and obtain a card that way. That card will receive ITV, 4, and 5.

is ITV-2 available without a card,

No, and even worse is only available on Sky's £19:50/m package or above.

I thought that was a *hope* more than a rumour!! It probably depends on just
how MUCH extra the BBC are now paying for programmes - something ITV are
likely to discover - even if it is not made public.

Same thing on Usenet :-)

I do recall ITV making a statement last year that they'd review their
encryption arrangements in light of the BBC's move, before renewing their contract
with Sky.

Indeed !
