Default News Item: BBC Report on Digital Switch Over

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pre...itchover.shtml

There is a heck of a lot to discuss in he

1. No mention of LOGOs and RED DOTs. Very very few people seem to have
an issue with DOGs, if the BBC is to be believed. So few people, that it
did not mention a single sentence in the report or one word of
explanation on BBCi.

2. "On this, the Corporation welcomes the opportunity to work with other
organisations as quickly as possible to begin to make a non-subscription
digital satellite option a reality."

So the BBC who instigated the collapse of a multi PSB Free Sat have made
a statement of intent to reverse this problem. Good.

This means that something major such as ITV, C4, and FIVE going Free To
Air will happen, or something major in resetting up SOLUS must happen.
May be now Dyke-head is gone, the BBC may even re-encrypt.

3. "Carolyn Fairbairn, Director of Strategy and Distribution, BBC,
added: "The BBC has been making a vital contribution to bringing public
service broadcasting into the digital age. "

Like BBC THREE, Carolyn. ;-)

Like CBBC and CBEEBIES that is known to make children fatter and lower
their IQs and speech skills. ;-)

4. "Therefore as we move closer towards this common final goal, the BBC
will continue to play an important role in partnership with both
Government and other organisations to realise a fully digital Britain."

A strong BBC, independent of Government, but also in partnership with
the Government and other organisations including BSKYB.

5. "On the final stage of the journey towards a fully digital Britain we
want to see our services available to all licence fee payers as quickly
as possible and ensure that there are no pockets of people who are
digitally disenfranchised. "

Well with 50% yet to convert, and most of the conversion done by BSKYB
so far, this is not the final stage of the journey, more the beginning
of the hard slog.

6. "ensure that there are no pockets of people who are digitally
disenfranchised."

Given that viewers can not watch most programmes on BBC THREE and BBC
FOUR without "continuous picture interference" from the BBC's on-screen
marketing graffiti, I don't think her version of "disenfranchised" is
quite the same as mine. ;-)

7. "Most importantly we are focused on our audiences and are aware of
the danger of a deeper digital divide," commented Andy Duncan, Director,
Marketing, Communications and Audiences, BBC.

Well either audiences like DOGs or hate DOGs. If they "like" them, why
don't they appear ALL the time, everywhere. If they "hate" them, why are
they there at all, and why does the BBC fail to implement a Virtual-DOG
system?

Why won't Andy Duncan address the 1,861 members of LOGOFREETV or 6,900
signatories of What Video and TV LOGOs must die?

Let the rioting and flame wars commence.

In what sense do you claim "the BBC instigated the collapse of a multi PSB
Free Sat?"

There is a heck of a lot to discuss in he

semi related I guess...

my brother got my mum a freeview digibox for her birthday. We don't have an
outsider aerial but the picture is great. I know that you can pay to "add
on" at least E4 but can you get anything else added on and if so would we
need an aerial then?

I hate technical stuff

The box you have purchased will not be able to receive any of Top Up TV's
"add on" channels, regardless whether you have an outdoor aerial or not.

Top Up's pay channels require a card, only the older (and no longer made
or sold) OnDigital/ITV-Digital boxes have a card slot. Top Up claim
that new boxes will be on the market 'soon' with card slots, but for
you I guess it's too late.

What are you doing on usenet then? That probably puts you in the top few
percent of tech-savvy geeks already, and thats before you include the
fact that you're not top posting ;-)

If you really wanted to, you could always pick up a second hand
OnDigital/ITV-Digital box - they are a bit slow and clunky compared to
modern ones, so people are always selling them. For the channel lineup
go to http://www.freeview.co.uk for the free ones and
http://www.topup.tv for the pay ones.

Please be careful with your quotations, neither myself, nor "No Logo"
actually wrote any of that !
