Default light pipe audio problems

When watching DVDs on my samsung hd841 and using my panasonic sc-ht05
for the audio, once or twice per dvd the audio will go to completly
static (extremely loud).

I am using a digital (light pipe) between the two for audio and the
only way to stop the sound (it continues if I pause the dvd) is to
stop the dvd or remove and reinsert the digital audio feed.

Has anyone else had this problem with "light pipes" or does this sound
like a dvd player / audio reciever problem?

doesn't sound like a connection problem - usually just mutes when conneciton
is cut off

how is the receiver ventilated? heat can cause decoders to flake out like
this

I have a home theatre PC that has a similar problem. Its wierd, if I was to
unplug the optical cable I get lots of static, as if the sound device tries
to decode daylight. If I just turn off the optical output on my satellite
box, the PC interprets no signal into static.

I have not yet had time to figure it out, but my guess is that when there is
no input, optical devices get freaky. I am guessing you are losing signal
for one reason or another. I must try copper SPDIF.
