Must have been around 1984-1985 for me - fortunately it wasn't Betamax.

I bought a huge and very heavy sharp vhs recorder in 1982, it was half price
in dixons at £450, as a ex demo model.

BTW, who remembers the Young Ones 'video' episode? That was one of my
favourites!

If you mean the episode with

"Oo, have we got a video?"
"YES WE'VE GOT A VIDEO!"

it's actually called "Nasty".

If you mean "Summer Holiday" (episode 12 of the Young Ones), this has
definitely been shown.

Could you by any chance be thinking about the final episode of Father
Ted, which has never been shown as originally filmed?

NOTE: This ["Going to America"] was the final episode of Father
Ted because in February 1998, soon after filming this episode,
Dermot Morgan who played Father Ted, sadly died of a heart attack.

The original endng for this episode had Father Kevin standing on
the balcony as before, with Ted coming out to join him. However,
this was shelved in favour of clips of previous episodes

I have all the young ones on tape from circa 1982 when they were first
repeated.

I bought a huge and very heavy sharp vhs recorder in 1982, it was half price
in dixons at £450, as a ex demo model. It immediately went wrong and took
about 3 weeks to fix. Eventually a good machine and lasted about 4 years
before the heads were completely worn out.
I can remember almost going for the equivalent and nearly cheaper new
betamax model with an interesting adaptor on the front which could load and
remove 5 tapes unattended. I have never seen anything like this on a vhs
machine, but am glad I went down the vhs route.
I must be a sucker as an early adopter of new gadgets, as the price has
tumbled over the years, and am now doing the same with dvd/hdd recorder.

Hitachi 800...Brought in 1980...Great machine which had a tendancy
to give static shocks every time you pressed play.

Happy Days.

You beat me then (same model - branded either Radio Rentals or DER - in the
autumn of 1979).

I still have at least six tapes recorded in 1979.

Can't remember the first VCR we had but I do remember having a Fergusson
Videostar with a remote control - well it wasn't so much remote as attached
to the VCR with a bit of wire.

The kind that you have to take the front window out to get into the
house and make a terrible racket when you rewind, causing you to get
stuck when you hurriedly try to silence it after watching dodgy stuff
in the middle of the night? ;-)
