So viewers are not as thick as ITV expected...!

Independent Television Network Pulls "Millionaire" Play-Along App

--"Celebrity" SMS Service, However, Proves Successful

The UK's largest commercial broadcaster, the Independent Television
Network (generally known by the acronym, "ITV"), has pulled the
interactive TV application that allowed viewers to play along with the
quiz show, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?," and win weekly cash prizes
of up to £1,000. The app was the first red-button app to the offered by
the network. In a prepared statement, Jane Marshall, who heads up ITV's
interactive TV arm, ITVi, said that the decision to drop the app was
made because "neither ITV nor ["Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" producer]
Celador were happy with the financial performance of the application."

In related news: Granada Interactive says that an SMS service with which
it enhanced the most recent season of the reality-TV show, "I'm A
Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here," has proven extremely successful. The
service, which allowed viewers to text in messages for display on-screen
during the show, generated over half a million SMS messages during the
show's 2-week run.

Dear Mr ****,

I won over £500 on the interactive game. It paid for my new TV.

Why do you have to be so nasty, Mr Masterton?

Has someone been unkind to you previously? What is the issue?

I was surprised when I first saw the US version a couple of years ago at the
much faster pace of questioning. Of course they have to ensure that th programme
is shorter because of the more frequent ad breaks.

Was the phone a friend option reusable when that happened? I hope not!

(It's a good job the Peseta was obsoleted recently because a million of
those is only worth about four thousand quid.)
