I'm getting Sky+ in a few weeks and am getting worried with
all the posts I see about Sky+. I currently have a Tivo which has been rock solid for over a year, can I use the Tivo with Sky+? Everyday I check this group and it's full of people complaining about season links not working, sky+ not working etc. How does the changing channels work with the tivo and sky+. I know with sky+ you can record a channel when watching another one, how does this work in combination with a Tivo. If the Tivo changes a channel to record something and then I change channel with Sky what will the Tivo record? |

If the Tivo changes a channel to record something and then I change channel with Sky what will the Tivo record? Yes SKY+ works with TIVO and TIVO can control SKY+ to change channels etc but I can't see much point having SKY+ with it's watch one and record another channel plus dual recording as TIVO's digital source. It's very much overkill. It would make more sense (to me anyway) to let TIVO have exclusive use of a standard digibox which TIVO can record from and then use it's stored recordings for time shifting etc. You could then add a second digibox (with mirror card) or a Freeview STB to extend the choice of live viewing etc. Just remember that if TIVO is recording the output of SKY+ then you can not watch any recorded programming on SKY+ so you are stuck with previous TIVO recordings. Which lets face it is what you get with a standard digibox which are probably more reliable and do not have any subscription for it's use or a sub that is waived depending upon the channel package. SKY+ has DD5.1 of course but TIVO can't record that audio format and if you are watching a DD movie than TIVO can't record anything else from SKY+. Has that made sense, might have lost the plot somewhere in there ![]() As for SKY+ reliability, it would scare me reading this group but thankfully I bought it from launch and I know it's been very reliable over the last two years after a few teething problems in the first month. Thanks for the reply Mike. So I can record a show on the Tivo and watch a different Sky channel at the same time. I presume I will need to change the channel with the Sky+ remote to do this rather than the Tivo? My current digibox is really old and it's terribly slow. I have ordered Sky+ basically so that I can get a new box. I pay the full subscription so it's not going to cost me anything apart from the initial cost. I was thinking of ditching my Tivo and using Sky+ but I dont really know what Sky+ is like compared to the Tivo. The opportunity to record one channel and watch another really appeals to me. However I love the Tivo, it's just a amazing piece of kit that I cant imagine not having. |

I presume I will need to change the channel with the Sky+ remote to do this rather than the Tivo? You can not record the SKY+ output and watch another channel on the SKY+, you can of course use TIVO to record from another source whilst watching SKY+. SKY+ has two tuners but only a single decoder and can output one channel at a time for viewing, the second tuner feeds the internal HD. You will be able to record the SKY+ output and watch a previous TIVO recording which is what you do now. TIVO has the control codes for SKY+ so it can change channels just like it does with a normal digibox. My current digibox is really old and it's terribly slow. I have ordered Sky+ basically so that I can get a new box. I pay the full subscription so it's not going to cost me anything apart from the initial cost. Yeah that's fair enough since standard digiboxes are too expensive compared to SKY+, SKY really should see the standard boxes at cost to existing subscribers who might have older/slower hardware. From reading other posts 99.9% of users do not have a bad thing to say about TIVO which makes you wonder where the second hand boxes come from ![]() Worse case you find TIVO still to be the better option but you have a fast digibox with it's own recording capabilities and DD support. Tivo users would probably find a mirror sub and second digibox to be of far more use than a Sky+ as only this will allow you to record one thing on Tivo and watch another live. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these.
