Default Snowblinded Sky+

During the New Year's eve snow storms I lost the signal from my dish.

No problem, I thought - we can watch some of those pre-recorded progs
on the disk, but no such luck! It seems that when you lose the
satellite signal, Sky+ doesn't allow you to view pre-recorded
programmes either!

I can't see that there's any technical reason why this should be so.
Checking my terms of contract I couldn't see any mention of this, it
just seems that Sky have gone a bit overboard in curtailing use of the
system under natural circumstances which prevent reception.

I believe its so you don't take your box around to your mates who don't have
sky in order to watch the recorded progs.

Having said that, I lost the signal in heavy rain the other day, but was
still able to watvh recordings, although I think it was coincidence that by
the time I'd started playing back the recording, the signal was back enough
for the box to play.

It is not just a question of if you lose the link to the satellite the box
loses its link to the epg so is unable to display properly?

Anything with SKY printed on it normally has a catch to it.

Same thing happened here but a quick brush of the dish to get settled snow
off cured (Damn things are too small)
I did have a laugh though watching Most Haunted live...People were
phoning/texting/E-Mailing in to the show saying the weirdest things were
happening like their TV channels going off :-)

And why shouldn't you be able to do that? You've paid for them.

Does your DVD rental shop attach a GPS device to each DVD rented in
order to stop you viewing at a friend's house? Of course not.

Indeed.

The technical reason is that the viewing card uses the live signal to
authorise decoding. This isn't a valid reason of course.

No. The Sky+ is perfectly capable of playing back recordings without a
satellite signal or EPG. However it has been deliberately slugged to
make this impossible.

Its exactly the same if you downgrade your licence, any programs stored on
the hard drive, which you may not have viewed. are no longer viewable, if
that channel is no longer being paid for. Hence the need for a dish feed to
allow you to view. In effect you a re not paying for the programs you have
recorded, just for what you are viewing at the time.
Conversely you could record loads of films off channels you don't subscribe
to at present, upgrade your package and then be able to see them.

Personally I prefer to stick with the basic sky and record films to my
Panasonic hs2, no encryption issues then if the signal is lost.
However this doesn't help if you loose the signal when the program you want
is on, as I did for about 10 hours when it snowed. (Dish is too high to
access and clear the snow off, I have to wait until it melts!)
