I do know they started to charge some people a sign on fee of £40 mainly
to stop previous subscribers with a P1 issue card resigning for a single month
to get a new card for FTV use.
I can't see the sense of forcing people to commit to a new 12 month contract,
they left in the first place and nothing much has changed with the service to
make another year more attractive than a month here or there as content changes.


The contract now states that you are signing up for a minimum of
twelve months in the small print. I pointed out that since there was
no subsidy being given as I installed the dish and supplied the box
myself which I bought retail - that I wasn't under any agreement with
them to keep the box plugged in to the phone, nor to be bound by a
minimum of 12 months, but they insist otherwise.

They are right - it is in the contract - but it's that badly worded I
think it could honstly go oether way if you were to put it before a
lawyer

Well from your explanation it sounds like you are taking out a brand new
subscription with previously unregistered hardware and not renewing a former
subscription on an already existing issue 2 smartcard.
A brand new subscription does indeed require a minimum 12 month contract.
it always has, are you sure the CS rep knew exactly what you wanted?

That's what I was told repeatedly by a number of people at $ky.


They can come out with an astonishing amount of rubbish at times.

The card has nothing to do with the box.


I know. This came about as we have 2 boxes. Both bought - one from
sky - nearly 5 years old now (Old pace) that's a bit sick (as in they
updated the software and made it sick) and one new Panasonic that I
bought and installed myself. We have two subs cards - and the newer
subs card they now insist is for a period of 12 months minimum as it's
a new contract (was previously FTA only) - and is now covered by them
for a year. I repeatedly explained the situation - but they insist
that this is the case.


Ah. Now we get all the story. Assuming that your new card isn't a
mirror card (and a mirror card would be costing you less) then it is
completely normal that the sub should be for 1 year: it is an entirely
separate new sub.

However, this new card still has nothing to do with the box and Sky
are under no obligation to repair either of your boxes. They might do
so for the standard call-out fee. They might even do so for free if
you threaten to cancel. But they aren't obliged to do it at all for
any price. You rely on their goodwill.


I put it to them that if I were to cancel the old box and then take
out a new package again with the same vieweing card what would happen
and they repeated the exact same information.


You have gone at this the wrong way. You could have taken out a brand
new sub with £10 installation using another name and without
mentioning your existing sub. That way you would have got a new box
which would of course have been guaranteed for one year.

Yes it's a new card but to replace an existing one that "expired" and
we hadn't had chance to deal with it. No big problem anyway - but
that's the news.

As for "did the rep know exactly what I wanted" - do they ever ;-)
