Might work but not recommended. Dig sat cable is made especially low-loss to
preserve signal integrity. Any re-splicing job is going to introduce
interference and signal loss, let alone moisture. Best to replace the whole
cable run from dish to box.

Of course, I agree.

My point is that if the accident happened say 5 minutes before a crucial football match on Sky
Sports, then a quick amateur fix that I described would be adequate until you had the opportunity
to perform a more permanent fix.

I don't want to test my theory with my own cable, but kindly asked the Original Poster if such a
fix would at least give him a picture for a few days. Even perhaps the whole Christmas holiday?
He could then worry about it when he has more time in the new year.

Brendan

Do you have any idea what I can use to waterproof the cable

to have some sort of rubber mask over it

This is standard self annealing tape or self-amalgamating tape [lovely
stuff]. You can get F-connectors, self annealing tape and CT100 cable (or
in its case, equivalent) from all Maplins and most B&Qs and every satellite
shop. Chances are you can get them from an ordinary TV shop - so long as
its not Dixons or Comet etc.

Not quite clear about where the break is but what you need to do is to
trim back the cable at the break, put screw-on F connectors on each
end and join with a in-line double male connector. This assumes that
you have some slack in the cable: if not you can replace from one end
to the break, or even make two joins and insert a short new length.
This isn't ideal but it will work OK if the dish is correctly aligned
and if you use the proper connectors. If the break is indoors then
waterproofing is not necessary. If outdoors then all the joints need
taping with self-amalgamating tape.

Id like to know if the digibox would still work with this type of bodge-fix.

Yes. There will be a drop in signal quality but it should still work.
Only for temporary use, of course.

Or an excuse for a quick jaunt down to your local hostelry for some
refreshments?

Phew! That's good. I was getting worried that you had fallen off the roof!
Hope it keeps going so you have a Happy Christmas.
Cheers
