Default Aargh. New News 21 tablod look

Just when you thought nothing could be as crass as the Sun-style $ky News
look, News 21 goes one worse with it's own big-letter all-caps hide-the
actual-picture shouty new look. And the *******s have done it to BBC World,
too.

I agree, it's bloody awful.

For a redesign that was supposed to take News 24 upmarket and make it more
distinctive, it manages to draw it even closer to Sky News. Perhaps they
can timeshare channel 501 with Sky News - no-one would notice the
difference.

I certainly let out a massive groan of disapproval when it slapped me in
the face as I turned over.

All it needs now is a permanent "info-ticker" crawling along the bottom and
their journey to the Dark Side will be complete.

I'm asssuming the big red "cross of St. George" stripe going through the
studio is just for today?

Yup. I thought the whole point of the revamp was to make it *less* like
Sky News? That's why it was criticised by the government.

Worse is the new DOG. At least before it was top left and didn't have an
opaque background. Now it's permanently in that ugly huge block on the
bottom left.

Pathetic.

And it animates too. *SIGH*

While I like the set, the music, and the choice of presenters, the
on-screen identity and tone are more tabloid and closer to Sky News than
ever.

I was expecting a tone closer to Newsnight than Newsround from this
launch...

I haven't spotted that yet, but I'll watch out for it.

I've always preferred BBC News 24 over Sky News, particularly because
they have better presenters, and yes, the music is better. But this is
totally the wrong direction. Couldn't they have kept the banners to be at
least translucent?

I was expecting a tone closer to Newsnight than Newsround from this
launch...

Ditto. As it is, they've just copied the set from the flagship BBC News
programmes, complete with big "Sophie-Raworth-compliant" screen.

On the contrary I think the new DOG is an improvement - at least there is
one instead of two. Remember, there was a period when News 24 had a third
DOG advertising the website address.

I also think that the use of on-screen graphics in general are the most
sensible I've seen them to date. Not to mention the funky new music and
studio. Thumbs up from me !
