Just spoke to Sky about getting Sky+ and they said if I didn't have the
phone connected all the time they'd cancel the contract and they can tell. I always thought it was just so I could "interact" and PPV - neither of which I do on the old digibox which was unplugged from the phone the day we moved into our new house (3 years ago) and found the phone socket on the other side of the room. To plug it in would mean running an extension cord past two double doors or a door and a fireplace (OK, under the carpet but what a drag!) - is this really necessary? Sky+ said it was needed for upgrades as well. Are they telling me porkies? Another question - when we first got Sky in our old house they ran the coax through the wall - no finesse, just coax from outside straight into the back of the digibox. This house I got an installer to refit the dish and put a nice plate on the wall - it needed a bit of fitting round an internal corner in the house. Will Sky+ be fitted to that plate or what? The FAQ leads me to believe there are two feeds and I can see some fitter walking on with a long drill bit and doing something unsubtle with my wall. Customer services are not terribly helpful and there's a real take it or get stuffed vibe going on! Andy |

The Sky+ phone connection is a contractual requirement that is not policed. It serves no useful purpose. Only for mirror subs is the connection policed. Sky+ said it was needed for upgrades as well. Are they telling me porkies? Yes. An out and out lie. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. Are they telling me porkies? Yes. An out and out lie. Correct. While technically, I have mine plugged into a working phone line, there is no way the sky (now sky+) box could use it to make or receive calls, since the computer I'm using to type this 'always' has the line in use. If you don't have the phone line connected, the Sky box won't be able to 'phone home' so Sky won't know you've ordered them so you'll never get charged. Surely that's the reason it has to be connected to the phone line all the time? Geoff. |

I don't order anything. I don't watch any PPV, I don't do Premiership +,
and I certainly won't use it for the internet/shopping; I have broadband (swagger just a bit) They also told me that this is the way they upgrade the machine, and categorically assured me that they do it down the phone and NOT via satellite. So - they way they police this, effectively, is to lie to their customers! snip How about when you order movies? A lie, or useful incompetence perhaps. -- Tumbleweed Remove theobvious before replying (but no email reply necessary to newsgroups) |

You can order these vocally over the phone though Sky do charge you extra. You can also just connect the phone lead from time to time, overnight. I don't actually consider PPV to be "useful purpose", just another waste of money. Surely that's the reason it has to be connected to the phone line all the time? Even for PPV the phone connection is not a permanent requirement. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these.
