Default "Known" Problems on Playback - SKY+

Anyone have this at the moment ?

Sat down last night to view Prime Suspect and it was clicking and
screeching. Then the screen was pixalating. After about 15 minutes it
started jumping frames (Pausing then continuing after a gap) then overlaying
the picture wit hframes from about 1 minute earlier.

I assumed this was a taping fault.

Tried The Bill, Robot Wars and others, all doing it to varying degrees.

Rebooted the machine and lost the planner. Rebooted with the card in wrong
(as per check of news group) and the phone line connected and planner then
came back.

Same problems.

Performed housekeeping then did a test recording, same problem. Gave up
phoned SKY.

They said this is a known problem and they are working on it. Did not sound
believable but he said many people have phoned. Asked when it will be
fixed, no idea. Have just started more test with the LNB swapped round.

Yup, exactly the same. Really resisted doing full system reset in the
vain hope that Pace might actually be able to salvage it. Phoned Pace
today and they told me "Oh no, we make no attempt to recover lost data.
The first thing we do is reformat, if that doesn't fix it we swap the
drive. Always fixes things."

So I tried a full system reset and it's still playing up. It will do
live pause, but if you start a prog recording after it's started you
can't then play it back. Pressing select drops you back to the channel
you were watching. Therefore I can only conclude the drive's screwed.

I happened to have an 80 meg drive lying around so popped it in and it
worked perfectly. But it's a really crappy design. Touching the top of
the box it felt mildly warm. Taking the top off and touching the top of
the drive was about one degree off burning me. At least as hot as a
central heating rad in full flow. You couldn't handle the drive for more
than a few seconds. If that's not a recipe for disaster I don't know
what is. There should be a quiet fan pointing directly at the drive, not
just one venting the back of the case by the power supply. It's almost
as if it's been designed to fail. Hmmmmmm.

Regards

Mark

It's more likely to be your hard drive dying.

Oh dear, that was what I was afraid of. No problems today though.

I had heard they'd switched over to the new encryption, wonder if this is
anything to do with it ?

What do both sets of signal quality/strength bar graphs read in Services-4-6 ?
