Default Is Sky really going to switch off the cards ?

I have an old P1 card out of my digibox.
When everybody says Sky have finally switched off the old cards
I will put it back in and I'm pretty sure it won't work either.
Why ? Because the encryption system will have been changed not because
the cards have been switched off.

If I have to pay for getting ftv channels via sky then I will just leave a
gap between tv licences to fund the extra cost - Not only does the
terrestial tv signal not get here but neither does the detector man - Mick

SKY smartcards rely on receiving a continual authorisation signal, when
they fail to receive this the cards becomes inactive, leaving your digibox
disconnected for a few weeks achieves the same thing.
When SKY finally stop supporting the original cards they will all fail
eventually but I expect SKY to send out a "Kill" command to the cards
after the final date. As you say putting an original card back in after
the official switch off date won't work since the FTV channels will be only
using the second generation of Videoguard.

Indeed. But what exactly is the difference as far as the viewer is
concerned?

I don't think that they will bother. The point is that all encrypted
channels are due to move to VideoGuard 2 (for want of a better title)
very soon and the old cards just won't decode this, regardless of
whether they are active or authorised.

Exactly there can't be that many old cards left anyway.

The same difference there is between saying you pay the TV licence to
fund the BBC and you pay it to have TV at home.

Indeed as you have a licence you won't have seen him, but as soon as it
lapses a flag will appear against your address to prompt a visit.
Those few individuals that don't own tv's know this to their annoyance.
Indeed I have heard of some taking out a licence just to stop the regular
doorstep visits.
