Default Oh what to do! (Sky+)

My dilemma:

We had a thunderstorm on Thursday which tripped the power out and did all
sorts of strange things. Anyway, since then, my modem in my Sky+ box will
not work.

The box was purchased on launch day (Oct 2001) and has been generally
faultless. I also have a mirror sub upstairs.

Now, I know about the obligations regarding the mirror sub and box dial-ins,
so I basically want to know my options and how much $ky are going to
"charge" me.

As it is just a modem problem, is it summat I can fix myself? Has anyone
else ever had this problem?

One option is to cancel the mirror sub, so I don't breach the Mirror sub
T+C's, but don't want to do that really.....

So, I hand the floor over to you!

Would threatening to cancel do any good?

Simon

Had exactly the same, lightening hit BT pole, came down line, damaged
digibox modem. Repair cost covered by household insurance and was
claimed with other items.

As I say to all my clients, if you hear thunder always, always,
always, always disconnect all devices (digibox, PC, fax etc.) from the
mains and especially from the phone.

I think that you would be on good ground to pursue Sky in court using
this reasoning: Sky require a permanent phone connection for both
boxes for the mirror sub. They alone decide the spec of the boxes yet
they aren't made in such as way as to resist the effects of storms.
Therefore Sky should foot the bill when the poor build quality of the
box prevents you from fulfilling the contractual requirement of the
phone connection.

And of course the usual consumer laws are in your favour as your Sky+
is probably only a year or two old, at most, and is therefore still
well within the "reasonable time" that it can be expected to work for.
Also a modem device that can't resist a storm is clearly unfit for the
purpose for which it is intended (being permanently connected to the
phone).

Is it connected to the same (working) phone line as your other box?
If so you are not breaking the T&C. The T&C say NOTHING about the
modem in the boxes working.
