Default Bloody FTA BBC

A reason for me (and many others in Scotland) why the BBC going FTA is a bad
thing:

"Viewers should note that, due to contractual reasons, coverage of the SPL
and Scottish Cup matches will not be shown on Digital Satellite (D Sat) this
season.

D Sat viewers should instead turn back to their analogue signal using the
traditional TV aerial to see all the football coverage.

D Sat viewers whose analogue reception is no longer functioning should
ensure their aerial installations are checked and repaired by a competent
aerial installer."

So just to stop folk outside Scotland picking up these matches, we have to
put up with poorer quality non widescreen transmissions, grr!

Or watch Freeview. Problem will go next time the rights are negotiated.

I wonder if people in Scotland that have a Sky subscription will also have
BBC1 Scotland blanked when the football is on.
Anyone know ? Its not clear from the BBC's FAQ.

Yes, they will. The BBC are not going to switch back to being
'encrypted' just for one programme.

Because the BBC One Scotland feed is FTA - and thus available to all
receivers - the only way of blanking it is to not broadcast the match at all
on satellite. Whilst it might technically be possible to specifically stop
Sky receivers viewing the match - I don't know about this - I don't think it
is possible to guarantee that other FTA receivers wouldn't continue to be
able to receive it. Therefore the only route the Beeb can take is to not
broadcast it at all on Dsat in any form?

Shell out for a Freeview box just to get a decent digital widescreen picture
for the football?

No thanks.

What isn't clear about:

Perhaps you should blame the Scottish FA as I guess BBC would have
transmitted the
games FTA on DSAT if the Scottich FA did not mind...

Since the Scottish FA (or whoever is responsible) sold the
outside-Scotland rights to another company (Setanta Sports), I should
imagine that THEY would mind very much indeed..
