Am I imagining this, or was there an option for a one-off, quite expensive
"lifetime payment" for Sky+. If there was, surely the people who took it out
will be a tad ****ed off?

hope its true

A source at Sky has mentioned to Sky Digi Online that Sky+ users will

have
their £10 access fee dropped as from 1st October 2003. Also, Dual

recording
will become a reality in Mid-August. Sky will also be launching three

new
Sky+ boxes from October time, with a push towards Sky+ as the default
reciever in the maketplace in time for the Christmas sales. More on this

as
we get it in the coming weeks.

Pretty major development if like you say it's true, so major infact it
sounds like wishful thinking by someone with a ouiji board
Dual recording has been on the cards for the last year, hardware has
always been capable but it's required an OS addition to make it
workable. The Amstrad SKY+ might be making an appearance later
this year but not sure where the other two versions are coming from.
SKY+ as the default receiver in the market place, well there isn't a
marketplace for SKY hardware as such, you don't see all the current
models in your local Dixons and those you see in dealers and online
hardly have a realistic price tag. SKY+ as the entry level STB is a good
idea but probably too expensive to be in a subsidised install deal not
forgetting it would be a great way to **** off millions of current users
who suddenly become second class customers.

Not so. Sky sales are slipping back.

Sky+ is the anti-churn Endgame, that will out-feature all rivals.

The City will love it. It will bring in new business. It will allow them to
increase ARPU.

That isn't reflected in the viewing share figures - they continue to
climb, mainly at the expense of the big 2.

If they do indeed dump the £10/mth fee, and introduce a double-recording
feature, that will surely send Sky+ sales soaring.

I suppose if the drop my £10 sub I will be happy.

All users should be delighted. This extra payment quickly exceeds the
entire purchase cost of the Sky+.

But
will be most upset if it is one of these new boxes that do the dual
recording and not the new Pace one I have just had installed.

All boxes have two tuners and should be capable of simultaneous
recording.

There has never been such an option. I might have taken it had there
been.

There is an option on the Sky systems for a lifetime subscription. Not sure
if its available to the general public.

I suspec the real problem is further down the ladder than that. Look
at how many people are in jail for not paying their TV licence.
(Mainly poor people and women.)

Considering that Sky is something you can either afford or not, and a
product just like anything else, I think you're barking up the wrong
tree.
