The cutting off of 560,000 FTV viewers will not effect BSKYB's share price. However, the prospect of either the BBC supporting a FTA break-out on DSAT or Expansion of FREEVIEW may well harm BSKYB's share price. And for the record, I recognise BSKYB's contribution to UK broadcasting and the market, however, I merely resent its DOG, RED DOT, Crop, and Advertising policies.

Look. The best way Sky or any business can make profit is by "providing
customers with what they want". If Sky would provide channels in smaller packages or provide services not obliterated with adverts, DOGs, RED DOTs, 4x3 crops, etc, then more people like me would subscribe. It's somewhat simplistic to say the best way to make a profit is to provide customers with what they want. I'm sure everybody would like to be able to buy a BMW for a pound, but doing so wouldn't exactly be good business. It may seem logical that providing smaller packages of channels for people would get them more subscribers, but the very fact they don't indicates to me that Sky have done their homework and concluded that the current package structure is best for their business. As subscribers, we may find DOGs etc annoying but I doubt very much it even enters into the mind of 99% of people taking out their first subscription. For most subscribers it's one of those issues that if you ask their opinion, they tell you they would rather not have DOGs etc, but they don't actually feel strongly enough about it to do anything. I have a Sky sub, but also 2 boxes with FTV cards. We have no Freeview in this
area. Surely I have a legal right to receive ITV and C4 in digital quality without paying 2 more lots of subs? Alternatively I'd like Sky (or ITV or C4) to refund the money I spent only 6 months ago on the two other boxes. Also, where is my official notification from the relevant organisation regarding the cutoff? Are we just expected not to notice when the chanels disappear? It seems only those who lurk in this NG know this is going to happen. Disgraceful. Questions need to be asked in the Commons!! Adam

NTL certainly and I assume TW force you to subscribe to their digital TV subscription packages to gain access to the digital "terrestrial" channels they carry. SKY on the other hand allowed you to subscribe or purchase the hardware (new/used) and be given a Solus card which was paid for by your BBC license fee. The difference between the two digital platforms thanks largely in part to the BBC's unilateral action has gone which unless rectified is a short sighted and damaging approach to digital take up in the UK. No doubt the arrogance of the BBC, the greed of SKY and the contempt shown by the other terrestrials towards the dsat viewers will harm digital TV and lets not forget the incompetence of the government and it's regulators in this mess. Whilst I would agree with the above I see little or no arrogance on the part of the BBC. For several years they have been paying huge sums to Sky for little return. They have been largely carrying the other FTV broadcasters.
