Default S-Video Connection

I have an newer A/V reciever without S-Video ports, but my TV has
S-Video input. Currently I'm setup with audio coax to the A/V
receiver and standard video cable to the receiver, then out to the TV.
Can I hookup S-Video directly from the DVD to the TV without going
through the A/V receiver while maintaining my existing audio
connections to the receiver? What's the purpose of sending video to
the receiver?

Yes you can do that.

Hooking up through your receiver allows for easier video switching. It
switches the audio and video at the same time instead of changing the audio
source on the receiver, then having to change video inputs on the TV. Going
through the recever just allows you to do it all with the push of one button
instead of two, basically.
