Hi all...
I get the impression that, should I go ahead and buy a VCR with ad-skipping functionality, that I will not be able to get this to work when recording from Sky Digital? Could I just confirm that I have this correctly? It would save me the purchase cost of getting it right! Has anyone found out any other ways of skipping ads when recording from Sky Digital? Best wishes, Paul |

Sorted! I can't bring myself to watch ANYTHING anymore direct from those advert pumping bas***ds sky! -- __________________________________________________ Personal email for Gareth Jones can be sent to: 'usenet4gareth' followed by an at symbol followed by 'uk2' followed by a dot followed by 'net' __________________________________________________ |

Best wishes, Paul IIUIC the main way of recognising ad's is that the sound level goes up 3dB, possibly you get flash screens and lots more transition, so a good system could learn it (Tarrant on TV might fool it though). Generally each channel has a characteristic time (e.g. 3m30s or 4m) and you just search forward for that time (my VCR has a time display). |

writes Naw, it's called BBC. Needs to be a bit more specific nowadays but I know what you mean. Its a pity its not called 'Freeview'! I have this nasty feeling that the licence is going to go soon, and what's going to happen then? Possibly even worse is the scenario (which is apparently happening in the states already) where so many people have equipment that allows them to skip past the adverts, the ad people are now cutting back on traditional 'every 15 min break' type of adverts and are paying for in your face product placement/endorsement in the bloody show itself :-( -- __________________________________________________ Personal email for Gareth Jones can be sent to: 'usenet4gareth' followed by an at symbol followed by 'uk2' followed by a dot followed by 'net' __________________________________________________ |

Hi Gareth...Can you please explain in more detail? Do you mean the ads are skipped during recording or during playback? That's what I'm puzzled about! And your Tivo system, is it Sky Plus, and if it isn't, how do you configure it to work with Sky? Best, Paul |

With HD disk based systems things like fast forward can be made much quicker, and as is the case with Tivo, easily set to jump instantly in preassigned chunks. e.g. if you HD record has a 30 sec jump button, just hit it quickly 10 times and you have almost instantly skipped the 5 minute ad break However, the Sky+ system is designed to enable Sky to disable fast forwarding during adverts if they wish. This feature isn't turned on at present, but if the advertisers think too many people are skipping the ads, don't be surprised if they do. loz |

And your Tivo system, is it Sky Plus, and if it isn't, how do you configure it to work with Sky? Tivo can be configured to work with sky, NTL, terrestrial - whatever. You tell it what you've got and it only downloads the appropriate listings. As has been mentioned, it records everything, but on playback (and you soon learn to watch EVERYTHING via this - never live!) you have a fast forward button. Press it up to three times for varying speed (hence the 'blip blip blip'!) *3 is _very_ fast so within a few seconds, you've passed the adverts (you can see the prog starting again) - but when you press the play, the tivo will jump back a number of seconds (depending on the FF speed) so you won't miss the start of what you are watching. Once you get the hang of it, you can get really good accuracy, and as it literally is only a couple of seconds, it doesn't really interrupt the program flow, and you do get this perverse sense of pleasure in knowing you've got your own back on those *******s that have taken your money once for the subscription ..... and STILL want to force adverts down your throat! BTW, the tivo has a great remote and a really well thought out methodology in operation. Even the 'blip' and other noises are ..... dare I say the word..... cool! -- __________________________________________________ Personal email for Gareth Jones can be sent to: 'usenet4gareth' followed by an at symbol followed by 'uk2' followed by a dot followed by 'net' __________________________________________________ |

Just to say very many thanks, and extremely helpful. What a helpful newsgroup! I am now beginning to understand what I need to do. How easy is standalone Tivo to get in this country, if I decided not to opt for sky + ? Cor blimey ...... are you really talking about UKMHC?? ;-) Now comes the problem. While Tivo is still going (very) strongly in the states, they have stopped selling the units over here, although they do still exist in this country and do provide the listing service etc to update the Tivo. While they might introduce the new models released in the states, your best bet is to buy second hand or from e-bay etc. There are (or at least were when I last looked) some companies still selling they and normally these are modified ones with bigger hard disks in which is well worth having anyway. I'd be really knackered if my Tivo went tits up (and I don't even watch much telly). I was going to say its like having a microwave. Until you have one, you don't realise how useful it is...... but then I realised its more like passing your driving test and buying a car - you can always eventually get from A to B by bus.. But once you can drive....... you get the picture. -- __________________________________________________ Personal email for Gareth Jones can be sent to: 'usenet4gareth' followed by an at symbol followed by 'uk2' followed by a dot followed by 'net' __________________________________________________ |
