Default HCPC Alternative?

Has anyone tried using a pc as an alternative to a dvd recorder?
I was wondering about using a shuttle pc with a dvd writer as an alternative
to a stand alone recorder!
Of course it would be cheaper to get a Panasonic E50 or similar, but if you
had a decent sized hard-drive and a tv input card it would be no dearer than
a stand alone with a harddrive!

Would this be practical do you think??

With the right software it works very well, although the standalone version
is a lot easier to use - WAF and all that.

Have you tried this then? I also considered the WAF but I was hoping it
would be simple with the right software etc.. ;-)

Good place to start... If you don't mind using Linux, mythtv and freevo are
good projects to get your hands dirty with

Yup.
The pain in the arse factor of setting it up and then using it v the
flexibility it gives you isn't worth the hassle though IMHO.
