Default DVD Recorders - do they record dual TV formats?

I notice that the Pioneer DVR-3100 makes the claim that it can record in
both PAL and NTSC. Is this a standard feature for DVD writers, or is the
Pioneer special in this regard? The Sony model RDR-GX3 that's about the
same price makes no specific mention of it, and it's a feature like that
that could swing me towards the Pioneer. Though I do like the Sony's
ability to record on both + and - formats. Both mutli-region for just
under £400, and both look to do what I'm after (make archive copies of
stuff off my Sky+ box) and no, I'm not bothered about RGB-in as I'll be
linking them all up with S-Vid, nor do I really care about DV in/out as
I don't own, nor want, a digital camcorder.

BTW, I'm not talking about PC based DVD writers, and I don't want a
Panasonic writer as I don't want, or have no need of DVD-RAM facilities,
before anyone ignores the question and tells me to get XXXX model from
either Panasonic or Philips, both of which I've already dismissed from
my potentials list. I'd consider the Tosh model, but so far I've not
seen anyone do a multi-region model, so that's off too.

Cheers.

Regards

Mark

The Philips machines will record NTSC or PAL too. I'd assume the Sony
does the same, given that it uses a similar engine for the +R/RW
portion, but don't quote me - if Bardo is around he might be able to
confirm as he has the bigger model.

You could consider this as standard in a way. DVD Recorders record in
the format the source is. So, UK TV signals will be recorded in PAL,
they will record PAL from PAL Video and DVD and do the same thing
with NTSC.

I know of no Retail DVD Recorders that actually can change PAL to NTSC
or other way around.

No problem, I've got an expensive digital standards converter that'll
provide the NTSC source. As long as they record NTSC from an NTSC source
fed in through the scart or S-Vid then I'm happy.

Cheers.

Just a note, the Sony has copy once video protection, ie: you cannot copy the
disc again... While I wouldnt be bothered about copy twice (no intention of
pirating etc), because I want to be able to make a master disc on DVD-RW
(removing adverts from shows precisely) and then copy the master to a DVD-R.

Its only thing which stopped me getting the Sony. Im hoping the JVC DR-M1SLB
Ive ordered from techtronics (and who have been sitting saying "confirmed" in
the order status for last 11 days) does have the same "nice and helpful
facility" (yes, that was sarcasm).
