Cox Cable Has the Explorer 8000

To all of you who are looking to TiVo because you really have no choice....
If you are a COX customer, The Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 is now
available or coming soon. Other cable companies may have them or be getting
them soon.
http://cox.com/newservices/
And
http://www.sciatl.com/consumers/Exp8000.htm
I picked mine up today and returned 2 TiVo's to the store I bought them from
last week.
Cox in Las Vegas is limiting them to 1 per household. High Definition units
should be out around the first of the year.

It has 2 tuners and records 40-50 hours. I do not believe it is upgradeable.
Cost is about $15 per month including Guide programming.
It's a rental, so you don't own it but then you can upgrade to the latest
version as they come out.

I am posting this here in response to the advice I got here such as "If you
don't like the terms TiVo sets out, then get something else"
I don't like the fact that the TiVo's turn into a doorstop if you don't pay
the fee. So for you others who don't like it, there is now a choice.
And yes, if I don't pay my cable bill this will turn into a doorstop too.
But then I just return it.

If anyone is here thinking that, I'd strongly recommend looking into
ReplayTV instead.

I don't like renting things that I intend to have for a while. After only
one year of renting that at $15/mo, you'll have put nearly $200 into it,
with no equity. You don't get to keep it, even if you end up paying it's
cost in rental fees.

To each his own, though...

Yes, but only $2 more than the Tivo service. The lifetime (of the
unit/company) is just too much. (for me)

$2 more, but less features and reliability (except the ability to
record two things at once -- and DirecTiVo does that better).
TiVo charges for DirecTV-TiVo combo box users: $5/month,
and that covers *all* DirecTV-TiVo combo boxes you might
have at your home.

The lifetime (of the unit/company) is just too much. (for me)

The lifetime subscription is for the lifetime of the unit. It's only
for the lifetime of the company if the company lasts a shorter
time than the unit (duh).

Anyway, that's too much for you, but you'd rather pay forever
instead? I'm not making fun of you. If you can't come up with
about $500 (recorder + lifetime subscription), then you really
have little choice but to rent from the cable company. (But, have
you maxed out all your credit cards?) I just can't fathom why
someone would rather pay $15/month for the next 5-10 years
(or longer) vs. $500 once. But if you want to, go ahead,
of course.

He may be paying 15.00 a month. But he is getting the guide info also
Tivo guide Info Is 12.95 a mo. All Its costing him Is 2.05 a mo.
Plus the fact there Is no buying the unit 300-400 bucks for a tivo.

You must not have read any of the reviews from folks that have suffered
with trying to use the SA 8000. Lock ups, incomplete records, glitches
on playback, spontaneous reboots, unfriendly user interface, missing
much of the functionality of a DirecTivo. No reasonable person would
call it a real choice.

If you dont believe me, just do a Google search, and you'll quickly see
I'm understating the problems of the SA8000.

Don't they also charge you a few bucks a month for a remote?, Now add on
the cost of your Cable bill, and you'll be well over the cost of a
DirecTivo for an inferior unit. Then if you want a 2nd unit its
$15/month for the bedroom, where as DirecTivo would be $4.99

I guess the SA 8000 is competition for TiVo the way a Vespa is
competition for a Lexus. Both will get you around.

The next thing will be people citing those cable-industry Dishes Suck
ads I've been seeing (especially on West Coast local TV), in which some
schmuck attaches his ratty-looking dish to a crooked stick that waves
in the wind, and then he complains the dish doesn't work right.

Is that any worse than DTV touting their "superior all-digital" channels?
It's a business and they all lie to sway the uninformed their way.

In my area the SA8000 was nothing extra for the box, and the guide
data was ~$6.50/mo. Making that cheaper than TIVO, but OTOH, I had to
get digital cable, and fairly high level package at that.

After trying it out for a couple of months I returned my 2 SA 8000's
to TW. They are highly unreliable and buggy.

That's it. I tried the SA 8000 last June, July and August. My local

can't be controlled without the remote, and the remote is worthless
without the box.

---snip---snip---snip---

I too live in Las Vegas, but here's what it would cost me to rent/use the
Explorer 8000:

Digital Gateway fee: $5.00
Digital converter fee: $3.95 (yes... still charged even though it's part of
the 8000)
Remote control fee:: $0.22
Service (subscription) fee: $9.99
Additional sales tax: $1.39
Additional franchise fee: $1.03

Total additional charge: $21.58

I currently own 2 TiVos (with lifetime subscriptions) and have held off
buying a third one because I wanted to see what Cox would be offering, and
at what price.

If you are a COX customer, The Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 is now
available or coming soon. Other cable companies may have them or be

getting
them soon.

I picked mine up today and returned 2 TiVo's to the store I bought them

from
last week.
Cox in Las Vegas is limiting them to 1 per household. High Definition

units
should be out around the first of the year.

It has 2 tuners and records 40-50 hours. I do not believe it is

upgradeable.
Cost is about $15 per month including Guide programming.
It's a rental, so you don't own it but then you can upgrade to the latest
version as they come out.

---snip---snip---snip---

I too live in Las Vegas, but here's what it would cost me to rent/use the
Explorer 8000:

Digital Gateway fee: $5.00
Digital converter fee: $3.95 (yes... still charged even though it's part of
the 8000)
Remote control fee:: $0.22
Service (subscription) fee: $9.99
Additional sales tax: $1.39
Additional franchise fee: $1.03

Total additional charge: $21.58

I currently own 2 TiVos (with lifetime subscriptions) and have held off
buying a third one because I wanted to see what Cox would be offering, and
at what price.

Interesting. I heard from a Cox user here in Phoenix that it added only
$10 to his bill, since he had digicable already...
