In any case, they're not "$300-$400" as claimed by the
other poster.

But we're talking about an 80GB system as a comparison, aren't we?

When was that established? When the $300-$400 comment
was made, I don't think anyone had mentioned any capacity
machine in particular. If you are talking about the 8000, I don't
know how big the drive is in that, but Jack Stringer said that
it records 40-50 hours.

The next thing will be people citing those cable-industry Dishes Suck
ads I've been seeing (especially on West Coast local TV), in which some
schmuck attaches his ratty-looking dish to a crooked stick that waves
in the wind, and then he complains the dish doesn't work right.

Is that any worse than DTV touting their "superior all-digital" channels?
It's a business and they all lie to sway the uninformed their way.

Yes, it's worse. The cable industry ads are outright lies. Anybody
who has a dish knows that the ads are lies, but it doesn't matter
because the ads are actually aimed at cable people. It's really an
effort to keep them from switching.

The picture I get from DirecTV is far superior to the one I got from
the cable company.

I don't think anyone would pay $100 for an extra 40GB, when you can get a
40GB HDD for $50...
Maybe it's just me...

Then you're voiding your warrantee

The warranty is 90 days. So, used it for 90 days without adding
a drive yourself. After that, there is no warranty anyway.

The free labor warranty is 90 days, while the replacement parts warranty
is one year. IIRC, the RCA DirecTV DVR has a two year replacement parts
warranty.

Whether labor charges might be more than the parts cost is an unresolved issue.

It depends on what part needs to be replaced, of course, as well
as what ridiculous prices they will charge you. Personal experience
with repair centers tells me that one will be fleeced on parts cost.
Ever try to get new video heads for a VCR, for example? I did a
year ago for a VHS VCR and was told the heads would cost $250.
I could tell the operator was very embarrassed to tell me. imo,
warranties for parts are mainly designed to encourage you to skip
the repair and buy a new machine, hence the prohibitive cost.

I really don't know, personally. Seeing as how they are $99 new,
I can't imagine that a parts warranty matters that much, even if it
is two years long. (And how about labor?)

80 Gig
40-50 Hr.

The Tivo IS easier to use than the 8000 and the TiVo's give more complete
Guide info.

You must not have read any of the reviews from folks that have suffered
with trying to use the SA 8000. Lock ups, incomplete records, glitches
on playback, spontaneous reboots, unfriendly user interface, missing
much of the functionality of a DirecTivo. No reasonable person would
call it a real choice.

You are right, I did not read the reviews.
I have noticed a few things that will take some getting used to. But I am
happy with my choice and the 8000 will be improved and I will upgrade as
newer units become available.
