I currently own 2 TiVos (with lifetime subscriptions) and have held off
buying a third one because I wanted to see what Cox would be offering,
and
at what price.

The TiVo's ARE better. If you are happy with TiVo turning YOUR boxes into
doorstops then stick with them.

The only way that *might* happen is if TiVo goes belly up. If the company
gets to that point, I suspect there would be one final software download
turning the boxes into dumb recorders. Acctually one of my units is over 3
years old and is a series 1. That one will work fine as a dumb recorder even
without a subscription.

The 8000's will continue to be developed (I think) and will get better
with
time.

I'm not married to TiVo, and I'm in no hurry get a third DVR. I won't
hesitate to switch brands/services on additional units when and if the
interface and reliability matches that of TiVo. It's a bit like the browser
war. There was a time when I could imagine using anything but Netscape. The
first couple of versions of MSIE were terrible and I questioned the sanity
of anyone using it. Over time that all changed, and now Netscape is nothing
more than a fond memory for me.

Jack, you've stated you're in Las Vegas. Do you subscribe to the
cox.internet.community.lasvegas newsgroup? (If you do, you do so under a
different name.) Come on over and let us all know how the 8000 works out for
you... the good, the bad, and the ugly. Give us the scoop!

Keep in mind that these things ARE computers and computers have a fairly
high failure rate. (Compared to TV's) And as far as that goes, Renting a
computer for $15 per month would be an attractive option. Many companies buy
computers and 3-5 years later can't give them away.
