Tivo BASIC is SUCH a great idea

TiVo basic is a great idea, and should be included on ALL TiVo's in the
future. It allows a customer to get "hooked" on the TiVo's basic coolness,
and then justify the extra cost for extra features later.

I think if they would have included basic service from day one, there would
be 10 times as many units out there..

I just HOPE they have the vision to add it to the standalone boxes now!

And add 50 bucks to the overall price... And then when you do sub do you get
the basic price back? NA.... Lets keep all prices as simple and up front as
possiable.

Have you seen the new holiday gift idea from TiVo?
http://www.tivo.com/holiday

Buy a TiVo for your loved one, and include three or months
of prepaid TiVo service with the gift. Get them really hooked.

Uhh who said ANYTHING about adding $50.00 to the cost ? There's no reason
to add anything to the cost now. If they sell a crapload of them with TiVo
basic, then they would A. make money on the sales of the TiVo's (Yes, they
do make money on the boxes now) and B. they would generate a much bigger
customer base, and more upgrades..

Where do you get that data? My understanding is that they aren't
making money on the HW, especially not after the rebates.

Better to license TiVo Basic out, as they are, and get it into more
products. But keep the cheap 'conventional' units available as the
simple purchase.

It does cost them money to provide the TiVo Basic service - the units
still call in, they still need to provide the data service and
dialup. So selling the units for the same price but with TiVo Basic
they'll lose money on anyone who doesn't sub. Hence the higher cost
of TiVo Basic.

Plus they'd be directly competing with the licensees. I think in the
long run TiVo will need to do what Palm has done - split into a
software vendor and a hardware vendor.

To sell a simple standalone unit with TiVo Basic I think they'd be
better off to create a different brand name to sell at a higher price
and keep the current units.

If the proper price-point for a product is $X, and you add a feature
to it, then its proper price-point is almost surely greater than $X.
Basic logic.

$50 seems about right.

If they sell a crapload of them with TiVo
basic, then they would A. make money on the sales of the TiVo's (Yes, they

Where is your proof that they would make enough from additional sales
to cover the value of the service they'd be providing?

and B. they would generate a much bigger
customer base, and more upgrades..

Proof?
