Adding Motorola DCT2000

I have a Sony SVR 3000--Signed up for Digital Cable and will have the
Motorola DCT 2000 Cable Box.NO VCR.I have looked, searched, etc for
info and it is really confusing.I am a Senior Citizen and need help.
Would someone please e-mail me on how to connect all the cables and
then how do I program the TIVO to communicate with the Cable Box and
how do I reprogram the TIVO to include the new channels that I will be
getting. I would also like to record one program and listen to
another. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Fred in South
Carolina, send info to; Thanks

All of this is clearly explained (with diagrams even) in the manuals
and posters that came with your SVR-3000. If you have trouble
with a certain step or steps, post again with more specific questions.

Fred,

Here's a little help that hopefully will give you an idea of what's involved.
You may have to refer to your manual and setup poster for details and/or
corrections.

I assume your current TV hookup looks like this:

Wall ---- TiVo ---- TV

First insert your cable box (CB) between the wall outlet and the TiVo:

Wall ---- CB ---- TiVo ---- TV

Next plug the IR control cable that came with your TiVo into the back of the
TiVo and position one of the IR emitters (with the small red bulb) in front of
the IR sensor on the front of the CB. You don't need the other IR emitter.
This connection allows TiVo to control what channel your cable box is tuned
to.

Does your TV have any RCA connectors; these are usually three closely-spaced
holes, usually color-coded red, yellow and white.

If your TV has no RCA connectors, you can't record one program and watch
another live program without buying more equipment (a switcher or a receiver).
However, you can watch a previously recorded program from your Now Playing
list while TiVo is recording. In this case, you set your TV to channel 3 and
use your TiVo remote to change channels on the CB.

If your TV does have an RCA input, do the following:

(1) add an RF splitter (S) between the wall and the CB (the cable company
should give you the splitter and a very short piece of cable to connect it to
your wall outlet).

Wall ---- S ---- CB ---- TiVo ---- TV

(2) If you have an RF (round) cable between your TiVo and TV, remove it and
replace it with the RCA cable (with red, yellow and white plugs) that came
with your TiVo. If there's already an RCA cable between your TiVo and TV you
can skip this step.

(3) Connect the RF cable you removed in step (2) or if you skipped step (2)
the spare RF cable that came with your TiVo between the splitter S and your
TV. When you switch your TV to use this input, you can use your TV's remote to
tune channels. But you can't watch digital channels - you can watch only
channels that you currently get without your CB. To receive two digital
channels at once you'd need two cable boxes.

To tell TiVo you're using a CB, press the TiVo button then select Messages and
Setup, then System Reset, then Repeat Guided Setup and then try to follow the
onscreen instructions. You currently have Cable Without a Cable Box - you want
to switch to Cable With a Cable Box. When it gives you a choice of channel
lineups, you want to switch to a Digital lineup. (I have a Sony SVR 2000 - it
may be slightly different for your Sony SVR 3000).

If the above Guided Setup doesn't ask you to set up the codes to control your
CB, press the TiVo button then select Messages and Setup, then Recorder and
Phone Setup, then Cable/Satellite Box, then Cable Box Setup and then try to
follow the onscreen instructions. (Again I have a Sony SVR 2000 - it may be
slightly different for your Sony SVR 3000).

I hope the above gives you enough of an idea of what's involved to figure out
the rest for yourself.

Good luck!
