NBC Lineup Message
Did anyone else get the Tivo message today about the NBC lineup? When I
turned on my Tivo this morning, the message came onto the screen immediately, which surprised me. I don't remember the exact wording, but it said something like "NBC has used unconventional start times for many of their Thursday night shows, so check your To Do list and Recording History to make sure you aren't missing anything". I was pretty startled that Tivo would send out a message like that, especially since it mentioned NBC directly. (Doesn't Tivo have some kind of joint agreement with NBC?) It seemed like a criticism of NBC's methods. I think NBC is stupid for changing the ER start time to 9:59 (which brings it into conflict with CSI, the #1 show on TV - how many Tivo users will just cancel ER instead of missing CSI or setting up a manual recording?) but I was even more surprised to see Tivo sending out a high priority message that seemed pointedly critical of NBC. Karen I can't say that I blame TiVo for sending the message. There must be folks all over missing parts of shows because of NBC's goofy start times, and I'm sure that the folks at TiVo are tired of hearing complaints about something they really can't control. I mean, for Pete's sake, NBC is premiering "Coupling" this Thursday at 8:27 (listed). If they're up to their standard tricks, that means the show will probably actually start at 8:25. . . Now granted, the NBC version of "Coupling" is likely to be a lame-assed imitation of their British counterpart, but if a person wanted to set a recording, it's an irritating little item they have going with these start times. |

As much as people complain about invalid guide data, here is NBC *ACTUALLY GIVING* correct guide data. (or at least closer to correct). I'm all for it -- it lets me get rid of the pre-pad on 'er'. (At least I will try it once on the premiere.. if it cuts out any of the actual episode and not just "previously on..", I'll go back to putting the pad back). Hooray for NBC giving correct times! |

No way. I'm not going to cheer this because their practice is solely to screw up the ability to watch and/or record stuff on other channels. Cheering this would be like cheering Microsoft for using nonstandard web language on its sites but giving you a free tool to use the nonstandard HTML. Wait... |

From Zap2It and TiVo guide data: 8:00pm (48 min) Friends 8:48pm (39 min) Will & Grace 9:27pm (30 min) Coupling 9:59pm (61 min) ER It's nice that TiVo is warning us that, by honoring the non-standard starting times, higher priority Season Pass entries on NBC may cause Season Passes on other channels to be pre-empted (due to a minute or three overlap). I'm glad that TiVo gave us this warning, but the ability to record 95% of a conflicting show would be a lot better. -Joe |

et... NBCs plans may backfire on them, however, when the odd start time causes *their* program to be pre-empted and missed completely. I'm glad that TiVo gave us this warning, but the ability to record 95% of a conflicting show would be a lot better. Absolutely. Ken |
This doesn't bother me because I quit watching all of NBCs lame shows !

You can complain about NBC, but IMHO Tivo's inability to schedule and record partials or deal with overlaps in anything other than an all-or-nothing manner is a serious weakness which allows networks to fsck with their schedules and prevent people from switching networks mid-evening. |
